DO YOU EVER BECOME DISCOURAGED WITH REAL ESTATE?

By
Real Estate Agent with Dockside Realty VA 0225142975

Do you ever become discouraged with real estate?  Hopefully the answer is no but the reality is probaby yes.  It has happened to me.  No doubt it has happened to you.

It is easy to believe, when on a roll, that it will continue forever and ever.  It doesn't always.  In fact, it really does.  Real estate is a business of peaks and valleys.  It is easy to become overly confident when you are peaking.  It seems it will last as long as you continue to do the things you have been doing.  That is not always the case.

When transactions are falling apart, one after the other, it is equally possible to think that it will never change.  And for some it never does.  Generally that is because they give up.  That doesn't always mean that they are quitters.  It could be because the entire market has taken a downturn and they do not have the funds to keep in the game waiting for a turn around.  They may have too many family responsibilities that make it impossible to stay with a career that is not fruitful.

For those of us that have been in the business for a number of years most, if not all, of us have experienced our share of peaks and valleys.  Some of us are fortunate to have way more peaks than valleys.  That enables us to hang in even when it you hit a time when it would be easy to become too discouraged to continue.

Real estate is like a game*. ROSE BOWL 2013 It is fun and full of rewards when you are winning.  On the other hand, it is exhausting and down right frustrating when you are on the losing end.

If the later is where you find yourself, step back and ask yourself why.

One reason may be because the industry as a whole is suffering.  The other reason might have more to do with you. This is what I discovered soon after becoming a REALTOR®.

When the whole industry is struggling all I can do is continue to struggle along with it pretty much doing what I have been doing although working a bit harder.

When others are doing great and I seem to be slipping behind I have to do a bit more soul searching.  What am I doing that isn't working compared to what others are doing.  Sometimes it is not that easy to figure out.  They may not be so willing to share where and how they are getting their leads.  They may not be telling you where their advertising dollars are being the most effective or whether most of their leads are coming from doing floor duty and if so what days/times are the most beneficial.  Others in your office may not talk about the farming that they are doing for listings.  If that's the case where can you go for this kind of advice?

Active Rain.

Active Rain is where any REALTOR® can go to get the best advice out there.  If you need help with your web site, with blogging (or to even discover what that is all about), farming, advertising, marketing, etc. you will find the answers here. This is not a static web site.  It is ever evolving.  Changing with the times. Constantly trying to stay ahead of the curve.  How is that possible?

Active Rain staff and Active Rain members make it happen.  Teamed together they are able to provide up to date information, advice, examples, and plenty of pep talks. It's as though you have a whole team behind you with coaches galore.  Who would not like having that as you play hard at this game known as Real Estate. You find you have a terrific number of cheerleaders rooting for you to succeed.  It really, really helps.

To answer yoru question. .

Discouraged?

Absolutely not!

You may find obstacles . .just like inside any job you can do. .

but discouragement kills drive

. and you need drive to march ahead

Playing semi-professional soccer before, I can tell you that I played every second like I always had a chance to win . .all the way to the last second..

I work the same way. .

Glad to know I can look here for answers.. As I was just sitting here, thinking to myself that I wasn't sure where to go to get leads. Even other newer agents in town, seem to be getting more than myself. So nice to think about, I am not alone. Just need to find a strategy.

I remember getting licensed and then expecting my phone to ring off the hook as I casually helped thousands buy or sell. I didn't know you had to go out there and find them...I thought they would find you. Then, you realize you are not the only LICENSED FISH in the sea and yes, if this business is not for you, there is your wake-up call...good post

Thanks Kate.  I agree with your thoughts about Active Rain.  I've only been here a short time and already have found many helpful posts.  I'm glad I decided to take the plunge and join Active Rain.  The help of other agents is going to be invaluable and I'm confident that consistent blogging will help my business.  I'm looking forward to a great year!

Kate, one thing is for sure, I wouldn't be here now if it hadn't been for ActiveRain. I started my real estate career at the beginning of 2008. It has been a difficult few years. There wasn't any money to spend on direct mail, blogging was the only thing I could afford to do. Buyers helped me get through this tough time. Things turned around in 2012. Now, I'm hoping to keep the momentum going at least through my kids college years. I've been through the valleys, I hoping for a few more peaks.

Kate,

Very true.  While I love being a Realtor, there are definitely tough days or moments that make you wonder.  The good news is the wondering has been for mere moments or hours, not let's change jobs:-)

The big challenge to what we do is the many factors we cannot control.  Even if we do an amazing job to the highest levels, we might not get paid.  That's a tough nut to swallow, but part of our everyday business.

Knowing what works for us, how we can thrive make it easier to be in this business.  I can't imagine doing anything else and that's a good thing.  If all you can dream about is a different career, it is probably time to change!

The game analogy is also good.  Life business, the stock market and more, it's a peaks and valley world in real estate.  Being prepared for those peaks and valleys helps you survive and thrive.  In good times, it's important to keep spending reigned in, so that you are covered for those valleys that are just part of the business.

All the best, Michelle

Kate:  After having been in this business for so long (37 years +), I can honestly say that even when you're winning and getting the transaction completed ... it doesn't feel like it used to.  Our business can be exhausting and uber-stressful.  In the past, the greatest "pay" you received was watching happy clients at the Closing table.  The last few years have taken a toll on the level of excitement and joy you see coming from clients now.  You're not alone in asking questions and assessing the rewards.  I believe if honest, we ALL find ourselves doing just that more often these days ...

Hi John...That's true.  There have been a large number of agents that found it necessary to leave the business.  It is not an easy business especially when you are the sole or main breadwinner for a family.

However, for those that remain, real estate continues to be an ever changing challenge.  It is one of the reasons so many of us love it.  One minute you might be trailing behind and the next minute you score a victory.

Great post and I really do believe that your own attitude is the best tool that you have for success.  I have also had those months when every deal was a cliff hanger and some just died a slow death.  You just have to learn from them and plow forward.

Great timing for this post. I was fortunate enough to be on top of the mountain for most of 2012, the 4th quarter was a struggle though. I am in a valley now but you've given me just the boost I need to start climbing back up. Thank you!!

I think we all have these struggles.  Some of us bounce right through them in the same day, others of us will spend days or weeks agonizing about what to do.  The key is to stay positive and talk to everyone you know!  There is always information to share in your community.

I've learned to always to look ahead in my business.  If I have closings scheduled for February, I wanted to make sure I have a March and an April and so on.  Then if something falls through-which happens-I'm still moving forward and positive.

Everything you say is true. I got in just a few years ago and have been struggling, but I built a foundation that is really, really strong. My education is excellent (thank you ActiveRain) and my habits are excellent. 2013 will rock!

I have definitely found this positive attitude group on ActiveRain to be just the cure for the times I am feeling discouraged.  Real estate is like a rollercoaster at times, but that is what makes it so exciting.
