San Diego Balboa Park 2015 Centennial Celebration Coming into Focus

EDGE2015

Balboa Park Centennial

In 2015 San Diego's Balboa Park will celebrate 100 years since the Panama California Exposition of 1915 that took place on a designated parcel of land that left San Diego with a world class park and an internationally famous Zoo. The planned year long celebration is to be called EDGE2015. With involvement from many other countries with pavilions highlighting their unique culture and this centennial will look something like a hybrid of a Worlds Fair and a Superbowl Experience.

Behind the name of Edge2015 is the year long celebration of the past 100 years and with focus on the illumination of the next 100. Demonstrations and displays will cover the gambit from Art, Lifestyle, and Technology. There will be several pillars of the theme with Innovation being the general theme integrating the arts, science, medicine, energy, urban life, economic as well as social life in our city.

All the ideas and plans are coalescing and as more specific events and exhibitions are announced I will continue to update with all the amazing things that will turn San Diego Balboa Park into another hosting grounds of a year long event extraordinaire.

Hi Jim, It is going to be an exciting year drawing millions form around the world. The Pavilions of other countries should be remarkable, perhaps something on the order of Epcot. That would be very cool indeed. Whatever they turn out to be, I would guess they could remain in the park like International Village for quite a long time.

Great montage and a wonderful reason to come to San Diego! I visited Balboa Park briefly a few years ago and sure would love to come back and take more time to see the sights.

The intricate details on that classic structure are remarkable, William!  They simply don't build them like they use to!

Hi William,

Great photos of Balboa Park. I have not been there in a long time but I remember it is huge. We are going there tomorrow to visit my mother-in-law. I love San Diego. Happy New Year.

William,

Happy New Year.  It sounds like Edge2015 will be an amazing event.  However, based on your pictures and description it sounds like 2013 would be a great year for a visit to the Balboa Park.

William, I love reading your localism posts.  I always get to take a trip down memory lane and recall when we lived in Chula Vista and would see these wonderful places as a family.

I love Balboa Park and visit it almost every time I go to San Diego to see family.  We may get down there this year and will stop by to see it at 100 years old.

I love architecture of those buildings!

I was there few years ago and made a lot of pictures:)

Funny thing, our Balboa park is in my neighborhood, but it has none of that:( We do have golf fields, a lake, tennis courts, etc.
