What Subdivisions Pay Clayton, NC City Taxes?
This is a great question and has quite a bearing for people searching for homes in the Clayton area because it can affect what they can afford monthly... and are willing to pay!
The Town of Clayton, just outside Raleigh has been growing for the last number of years and continues to do so. As it grows , more and more subdivisions spring up both within the town limits and outside the town limits. Riverwood is a fairly large subdivision that has two schools, shopping and many homes in all price points and is in the Town of Clayton, although it is a few miles outside of the town and parts of the surrounding area and subdivision is not part of the town.
Why is Riverwood in the Town of Clayton? A large subdivision such as Riverwood Athletic Club often requires the infrastructure and services that a town provides. Water, sewer, trash, fire, police, parks and rec, etc. are all services that a municipality provides...but it costs money to provide these services and the town charges a tax to pay for them.
So what is the tax difference between living in Clayton and living in Johnston County? Currently the tax rates in Clayton are .54, on top of that is Johnston County’s tax which is .78 which gives a combined tax rate of 1.32 per $100 that Town of Clayton residents must pay.
In dollar terms a house valued at $200,000 would have annual taxes of approximately $2640 in Clayton, the same house in Johnston County (its important to note that within the county there are different Fire Districts and they can add anywhere from .04-.10 to the tax bill.) based on .85 rate would have an annual tax bill of approximately $1700.
