Unselfish Act - life changing event!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Gwynn Teal Carpenter-Broker: Home and Hearth Realty (Austin)

July 2011 will be forever etched in my soul.  That's when my oldest brother, Edwin, began his journey toward dying.  He underwent brain surgery to remove what was thought to be 2 tumors but turned out to be one large potent tumor.  His life changed and so did those who loved him.

One year later after dealing with radiation and chemo, he went into hospice at the VA Hospital in Dallas.  5 months later on Dec. 13, 2012 he passed peacefully.....so what's so remarkable and life changing about his death?

He chose to donate his body to research!  His death means others will benefit from the LAST unselfish act he could do, helping medical students learn their craft on his body.

Edwin ask about my real estate career even when he could barely remember who was visiting him.  His stay at the VA hospital and hospice allowed me to give a smile to those men and women who served their country each time I saw them when I visited.

Tears flow when I less expect it but my love for family has deepened.  I'm grateful for the time I had with my brother. I'm grateful for the unselfish act he did.  I'm grateful that I've had a life changing moment.

Gwynn, Your brother is an amazing soul.  I'm so sorry for the loss of your brother.  He is still giving and teaching even as a result of your post.  Donating my body is not something I have ever considered although I am an organ donor.  Perhaps now that I had cancer they won't want my organs ... I don't know.  But I do know they can use my body and I will not put plans in place to donate my body. Thank you for participating in this contest and teaching me that donating my body is something that I want to do.

Dorie: thanks for taking the time to read about my brother .. he was truly loved by many - despite his gruff manner!

Richie:  Appreciate your comment...I read your Marine article about your son - brought tears to my eyes.  We never think about how tough it is on the family to try and re-integrate soldiers back into every day life.

Mimi:  Donating organs is advertised but not donating your body.  My loss will always be with me but with a new appreciation for what my brother did.

Susan:  I had many visits with my brother over the last 18 months.  Watched his declining health but watched to as he continued to be involved with not just immediate family but extended family and friends.  His faith was strong and he helped others during this time.

Stacey:  He does live on....

Kathleen:  Wow!  I'm blown away that my post brought about you thinking about donating your body.  I pray for your continued good health ...

Hello Gwynn. I am so sorry for your loss. My best friend died of brain cancer but there was no surgery possible then and it came quickly. I too have thought about donating my body to science. I hope to have time with it first, but later....why not. Again my condolences.

Gwynn, I am so sorry for you loss.  We almost lost my youngest brother to a brain aneurysm a few years ago.  He was in a little village in South Korea, and within minutes, the doctors there figured it out and had him on a helicopter to a world class teaching hospital.  He fully recovered, but even the thought of almost losing him can still bring me to tears.  I can only imagine what you went through.  Big hug!

My grandmother passed away at 97 and both she and her husband donated their bodies to a research hospital.  I don't know if I could do that, I am an organ donor.  Thanks for sharing your story.
