I have invested in real estate, the stock market and even in gold a time or two. Recently I have chosen to invest in myself and open a boutique. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, our communities and our country. I am excited to expand my reach. The below is an article I wrote about a last minute request to some most amazing women.
Not every woman dreams of being model, matter of fact most of us spend the majority of our time running from anything with a lens. It isn’t enough that the entire world tells us what beauty is, but we have to consistently compete with the perfection that is photo shop. We can’t even bare to look into the mirror for longer than a lipstick second. We see tired, we see stressed, we see every little thing we haven’t done. We see the demands and the expectations of every set of eyes that ever gave us a second glance. We are women.
Just when we thought magazines were the pure definition of evil along comes social media. Now we see snapshots of everyone we know looking perfectly pressed, pristinely polished and amazingly enough 11 years younger than what we thought. It is a bit much Ya’ll.
There are rare moments when women band together and drop the judgment, drop the suffocation of expectation and be the simplest version of themselves; the perfect version.
In all the craziness that is opening a new business, I failed to schedule the photographer and all the models at the correct time. At the very last minute I called out to women who have jobs, children and responsibilities. I called on them to drop everything and face the lens.
For some incredible reason, they did. Insecurities ran rampant for the first thirty -minutes, stiff smiles and fearful eyes avoided the reality that focused on them from ten feet away. All it took was a few laughs, a few admissions to insecurity and before we knew it, six women became six friends within moments.
The camera caught the transition, the sudden acceptance that only women can give each other. There was no additional lighting, no fancy equipment; just women unguarded and unashamed.
Women are beautiful, more beautiful when the guard is down, the make-up smears and the protective barrier of simplicity and sincerity abound. These women are mothers, sisters, daughters and wives. They are what women can be, in those few moments when the world offers a giggle and a smile.
