2013 came too fast: lost an entire year

By
Real Estate Agent

It is true!  An entire year has passed--in fact it appears to be more than a full year.
Should mean that fun is on the plate.

RIGHT?

WHAT to show for more than a full year?
...well, now own:
a set of crutches--metal, very nice looking--[only one used] [[don't ask me to explain]]
    a non-wheeled walker--not so nice
one -yes that is right ONE black hard wooden? sole Velcro-closing footwear
    a two-sided, white plastic ankle brace--interesting apparatus..does have Velcro straps--very modern. Ha
stretch-ie wraps--that can be used for most other injuries--[yea]
a 5mo. inability to use stairs--[not so good on the 'Down' part yet]
a two-time experience with re-hab, resulting in an additional 2 mo. stint with opened-stitches repair
a FINAL meeting with surgeon on November 13, 2012--[so Good]
a much fuller appreciation of the ability to walk, climb up & go down stairs,--[learning the hard way]

No longer have the wheelchair. My hair turned white, [Not in a bun]

Sal's hair is not white--in fact, he has it cut very short [much like below]

AND:
...a greater understanding of those of us who are always in a wheelchair with little or no expectation of
being able to leave their wheels behind.
...the chagrin when realizing that previous "understandings" were nothing more than making 'the self'
appear, or worse, Feeling empathy for those around who are not 'walking'
...an appreciation of the 'visual' discrepency of standing compared to sitting.
...the difficulty of getting in and out of the front seat of a car--[forget the 2nd or 3rd seats].
...the interesting reaction of fellow shoppers, [or walkers around you]
...the necessity of depending on another for so many things-[things that seemed so vital before]
...the necessity of realigning the "Need to drive" and to "do it myself".

FURTHER:
On the Business side of 2dragottas--etc-- leaving the RE Business has taken place here in our small
section of Michigan.  It is a natural result for us.
It is or will be strange as the year moves forward.
Do suspect that Sal will have stronger feelings about this than I, as he spent more time in the actual
steps taken to build a Business.
Don't know if he is saddened about this change.--[those are personal feelings that stay just that]
Do feel somewhat guilty---O.K.--a lot guilty--as he is The Driver everywhere since 6/25/2012...[tho'
I suspect that is giving him new 'spring' to his steps.  [fine with me--he deserves this "Spring"]

The only concern for me is not moving along with the rest of you within the Business of RE.

The fall--that caused the ankle break/shatter ??--was because I did my usual maneuver of moving at a rapid pace down the basement stairs.  Taking the landing step as incidental rather than necessary or something.

Most of me made it down 3 steps below the landing while the left foot appears to have hooked the rug and did not make the move with most of me.  Thus the appearance of the bone-shaped protrusion on the right side--who knew.
Did not plan this.
Did not even think that my speed was so dangerous.
Have discovered that once you pass a certain age--and I have--the 'go slow' sign must be front and center
[or, just the necessity of 'being present' in one's daily life.]

For those of you in the Medical fields, or who's spouses or children are so involved--I applaud you.
You are not to take this wrong.

The hard part of growing old, or worse being told that you are. is that "Look" or "virtual-clicking-tsk,tsk"
sound that accompanies so much of the attention.
I am old as far as years go, but not in anything else. [well, dancing may be out now--ha]

Have an xray that I will do [next week] simply because this new Doctor received the BC-BS notice.
That is all that I will do--this is an ankle that has been twisted, banged, having-tripped over all 5 dogs and any of the 4 cats who was slow. It has been stressed in other ways over the years.
I am left-handed, so it follows that my left ankle is the one that is always involved first.
So be it.

Now that you have heard that I am not old, nor moving toward senility --truly;
it is time for my meds--Ha.ha
Nope!

Wishing all of you a grate 2013.
Hopefully, we can continue meeting this way.  If not, then it has been a great experience for me these days.

This is a recent product --now a tribute to Sal's work and years in the RE Business.

Kathy,  I will take "brighter" any day.  Thanks for the wish.  At least it  will be somewhat slower that is for sure.  Have a great 2013.

Roy.  What a nice "Wish".  so sorry to read about your experience and I pray that you are all recovered or at least more recovered that not.  I only had the one surgery to place pins, so can fully grasp your situation.
That is the best part of 'life'--one can always find someone who has ir is having a harder time and LEARN from them.
Thanks for the wishes and for being "the Teacher" this time.

Bar: Congratulations on coming out the other side of all that. It's good for us to know when to slow down ab it. I used to be the first one to step up and help out, no matter how far, heavy, or high. No more. After a couple of injuries (nothing like yours, just painful) that took quite a while to get better, I can now say "no". My dogs do try to trip me up, but take a tennis racket to hit the ball, just so they don't jump up on me in their excitement.

Barb, sounds like you had a heck of a time over the last year. I'm glad you're back! Hope the ankle heals up and doesn't cause problems in the future. I had shoulder surgery last January and broke a toe over the summer. Mine wasn't as bad as yours, but I understand what you went through.

Oh, Barb! I so feel your pain, because I broke my left knee 10 years ago (broke a bone in my foot a couple of years before that and have broken a bone in the other foot in the years since then). I also have an assortment of crutches, boots, knee brace and the wooden shoe (the wheelchair was rented). The shattered kneecap was a horrible injury that put me on crutches for nine months and in physical therapy for nearly that many months. I ended up having to undergo a second surgery and then more physical therapy. I lost my traveling sales rep job, and I truly had to start over professionally. That brought me to real estate, though, and that has been a very good turn of fate for me.

Three months ago, I had quadruple coronary bypass surgery; and I can tell you that the knee surgery was worse. While I know my life was not really in jeopardy with the knee, the recovery from that injury and surgery was worse than recovery from heart surgery. My husband jokes that, "You weren't trying to WALK on your chest."

Good luck in your continued recovery. And STOP collecting hardware! ;-)

Hella,  Thank you for your thoughts; it is humbling to read of your {& other's] health or life experiences. It is so much a 'growing' experience.
The dog comment I fully get--best wishes for always being the one in control.
Have a great 2013

Eric.  thanks, but who is to say that mine was 'more' than yours. Pain is all relative and all injuries do hurt.
Hopefully your experiences don't interfere with your Business activities.  That is no longer my personal concern--so there you and all the other ARainers are way ahead.
Have a great 2013.  Hopefully, your Michigan area has been or will be spared the wet,White. cold snows. Ha

Ginger, thanks. I, too, am happy to be on my feet--missed the 'walking' part of life.  Don't know what 2013 will bring our way, but one  thing is--no more quick turns on the stairs.  See, it may take me time, but I do actually do learn from experiences.  Ha.
Happy 2013!

Paula, thanks for the words.  Strong or stubborn--not quite certain if I even know.  Our RE experiences will change in 2013, but the learned experiences from the Business will only grow as we move on.  Sounds a tad melodramatic, right? However, that is our approach to life-changing items.
Have a happy 2013.

Liz, Thanks> Compared to your personal experiences there is no comparison from here; that is the best part of sitting in the waiting rooms, watching others, and hearing of others' personal life.  It is a growing and good personal event in life.  Though I have zero desire to return to the medical offices--I do have memories of the others that came & went throughout the 6 months I was so involved.  The only interesting part of all that experiences was to see the different colors of the various 'casts' of the others.  These Doctors[6] in the offices there had color choices for casts: Plaster-color coated tapes.  Yellow, Blue, Pink, Green,Periwinkle [purple] and little animals or figures for the kids.  That part was fun. Now as I see folks walking around in colored casts it does bring a smile. [the only part that was NOT so cool was the sawing-off each time an examination was needed.  Boy, did I like the 3 week no change of cast. Ha Ha]
Have a great 2013--& if possible--no more hospital trips.  Tell your hubby that is humor is appreciated.

Ed.  thanks for the wishes.  Though we are no longer active in the Business--who knows what will happen in 2013.  We are planning on a move [almost certain] to Florida so it is obvious that Real Estate items will be involved.  That is fine with me / us.  The economy here in our area [involving Home sales] is picking up so it is time to once again start the 'for sale' processes.  Have a great 2013
