SUPERMARKETS ARE WELL RUN BUSINESSES part 2

By

In part one, we explored the supermarket and great effort is put into the word super as it is a well polished and presented place to shop with lots of dynamics going on. Here you will see how billions of revenue are generated and it is a living business plan that works..

THE MARKETS THEMSELVES WOKE-UP ONE DAY

The markets themselves woke up one day and discovered a gold mine right under their own noses. Billions were being spent by others to promote their products and were successful. Markets decide to copy the coloring, packaging and positioning of the other products and offer their own market brand. It is placed next to a popular well known item and even priced less...The well know products cried fowl, but he who has the gold rules...

THE PIGGY BACK PRINCIPAL

The results? Markets took in small fortunes and still do plus they don't have to spend money on advertising. Need I point out they share the premium space of those that do pay to advertise. Its almost parasitical by nature. But wait, the markets still had even more opportunities to explore

IT MADE ECONOMICAL SENSE

They usually occupy a anchor space in every shopping center next to other well wanted goods and services. So what did they do? They opened in house bakeries, eateries and even offered banking facilities as well as experimented with dry cleaning, pharmacy prescriptions and video sales just to name a few.

GIANT SUPER CENTERS

Then came the obvious next move which is where we are now. Giant retail super centers that offer one stop shop for everything all under one roof. They are like warehouses open to the public and are giving the markets a run for their money and consumers are benefiting from it too. HOW? Low pricing because of stiff competition.

BYE MOM and BYE DAD

Of course the downside is that smaller mom and dad operations who pay stiff rent cannot offer cheap prices and therefore cannot compete. We lose the homey hands on one on one experience for more volume based, low cost and more variety. But lets leave each other with this thought

The local supermarket is a well thought out and put together part of a giant business plan that is alive and always competing for your dollars. It has to cater to you the shopper using mental, emotional, psychological stimulus to be successful. You can get food anywhere, but making it convenient, effective and fun to get it makes these markets great examples of...

Superior business planning and the implementation of same...

Richie, as much as I love the mom and pop store, they can't give me what I need. Well, that's not entirely true. We have an IGA here that has just opened a second location. They are doing very, very well because they have things no one else does, cater to a higher end client. They also have an amazing deli. I hope they don't disappear, and all signs point to them staying. Unusual though.

Great thought provoking post. Only problem is, the thoughts are not that pleasant.... LOL.

Richie, I miss the supermarket that closed down the street from me. The big stores just gave them too much competition and they couldn't compete. I was willing to pay more for the small family-owned personal touch I got there. It wasn't enough.

Hello Andrea...Yes to your commenting...If something works and it brings results, it should be supported. Specifically when a place of business performs, it should be patronized as a way of showing appreciation...On a good Deli, I have seen good ones come and go and I wish I would have enjoyed them more and more.....and more?  lol

Debbie Reynolds...Big yes to your commenting. The landlord wouldn't lower the rents, the cost of business goes up and your competition comes in for the kill. Another favorite bites the dust....Whoa

Richie, if every business planned out and ran their business like the Super Markets do we would probably have a booming economy.  They pull out all the stops, and take no prisoners.

I really miss some of the stores I grew up with and one that hung on for years and years and just closed a couple of years ago.  It was small and it sometimes smelled, but it had the best steaks ever.  And somehow your post  just flooded me with happy children memories of going to market with my Grandparents and having a coke while shopping and leaving the bottle at the check out and them getting their deposit back and the smell, the wonderful smell of the coffee isle while they ground their 8 o'clock coffee for them.

Small businesses certainly need business plans that show the course to profits. Small real estate companies are among the businesses that find it very difficult to compete with larger offices.  One of the secrets of the success of RE/MAX is that many small business owners found that they could make a lot more money in a more efficient office.

Hello Tammy...you are sharing the true values of life...the little things that when added up comprise your life and all the wonder that comes with it. Yes to your commenting and thank you Tammy

Hello Roy...I liked your response which reveals your business savvy...I couldn't help but think of the 1910 model ford and the 2013 version and how everything we do can be done better, faster and cheaper tweaking it and making it more effective and efficient too. Real Estate and even any opportunity needs TLC, focus and then some strong legs to get up and move about. We must remember why America's nick name is the LAND OF OPPORTUNITY...thank you my camera toting friend Roy

Knowing a thing or two about the grocery business, most compete or get eat was our motto. Most mom and pops eventually franchised though.
