Repeat after me: A contractor is NOT a kitchen designer

They think they are though--even though lots of contractors are men who don't cook!!! Smart kitchen design makes a kitchen work right: Think "storage"...think "easy to clean"...think "pleasant to be in." Tile floors can be inexpensive, but standing for a long time on a hard surface can be tough on your legs.

Hi Zeta, now I am an independant contractor (Realtor) and I cook.  does that make me a kitchen designed?  lol

Hi Zeta,  I understand your frustration.  Your rant is not really against contractors but really against people who do not cook thinking that they can design a kitchen.  It is worth listening to what the contractor thinks - they may be cooks, have seen and fixed a lot of mistakes or can give you good technical advice.

You forgot to mention the service triangle.  I know it sounds old fashioned but the postioning of appliances is critical.  Anyway, I enjoyed thinking about the days when I designed homes and kitchen.

My rant is against lack of design, David. Too many contractors that I run into do the predictable and the obvious and the cheap when, by working with designers, they could kick it up to a good design level.
