Dear Leader,
A recent Posting in my Facebook newsfeed caught my attention last week and I hope it catches yours now, because it comes from someone who your organization is built around: a competent, unassuming, talented, worker bee. This young graphic designer - still relatively new to her first corporate position - had an unusual and unexpected surprise as she sat creating away at her cubicle. Let her tell it:
Supervisor just walked by my desk , leaned into my cubicle and said " Hey, I just wanna let you know how much I appreciate how hard you're working and everything you do around here, and then kept walking. Does he have any idea how motivating this is?! ;_; A little teeny bit of recognition, no matter how casual, is all I need to keep going during a crazy-busy period. For the last 90 minutes of today I go at 110%!
Yes, I know you're going to give them a pin at year five, and the annual company appreciation breakfast is right around the corner, but today, while she's on your mind, get up from behind your desk - even on your way out - go find that worker bee who's doing good work without needing any attention. Go stop in and surprise him - close the door if you can. Bend down if she's sitting at her cubby. Look him in the eye, and tell her from the heart: "Thank you for how hard you're working and for everything you do here".
Then, go do it again tomorrow.
The BEST recognition comes directly, sincerely and unexpectedly.
Recognition is the work of Leaders.
Lead. (Now...GO!)
