SHIVER, ELK RIVER!
This is the third annual celebration of Shiver, Elk River.
There will be quite a number of local events set for Saturday, February 9, 2013.

•Get Ready to Jump: The central feature of Shiver Elk River is the Shiver Plunge at Lake Orono. Last year nearly 100 people participated in the plunge which helped to raise more than $13,000 for 18 different local nonprofits. Plungers pay a registration fee and collect donations for a nonprofit organization of their choice. New for 2013, plungers will receive a T-shirt, and 100 percent of the pledges raised will be forwarded to the nonprofit organization designated by the plunger.
•Get Ready to Cook: Last year’s Shiver Elk River Chili Cook-off was held on the shores of Lake Orono and included amateur and professional cooks. All contestants will serve their own special recipes in hopes of winning the coveted People’s Choice award. The professional division has eight returning chefs from local restaurants. Last year’s professional division was won by Lynn Gadach, who cooks for Broadway Bar and Pizza. This year the committee is hoping to expand the amateur division. Amateur cooks will prepare their chili at Shiver Elk River Chili Cook-off kitchens and bring it piping hot to the event site. Shane Hague of Elk River won last year’s amateur division and will be defending his title in this year’s competition. People’s Choice will again determine the awards for both divisions and winners will be announced the day of the event.
•Get Ready to Play: Hockey, that is. Shiver Elk River is hosting an outdoor hockey tournament. Teams are now forming for men’s and co-ed teams for this year’s event. Games will be played Friday evening and Saturday, (Feb. 8 and 9) at Handke Stadium. Teams will compete in a double elimination tournament playing four against four. The entry fee is $100 per team. You may register six to eight players per team. Helmets are required.
•Get Ready to Run: New for 2013 is a 5K run-walk starting at Orono Park. Registration is $25 and includes an event T-shirt. If you are one of the brave ones, there is a discount to register for both the run and the plunge. See the website for more details.
•Get Registered: All the rules, registration forms, guidelines and details are available at www.shiverelkriver.com. Deadline to register for the Shiver Elk River Plunge and 5K is January 25. Deadline to register for the Chili Cook-off is February 1.
