Denver Art Museum: A great place to visit when it is 15 degrees

This weekend, the temperatures in Colorado could be described as being bitterly cold.  It is presently 15 degrees in Parker, which is part of the Denver metro area.    If you are in the mood to get out, consider visiting the Denver Art Museum.   Although Becoming Van Gogh is sold out for the remainder of the exhibit, the Denver Art Museum has a broad range of exhibits and activities that will appeal to wide variety of tastes.  The exhibits are structured in a way that is meant to appeal to novices as well as person that are very knowledgeable about art.    It is entirely possible to have a completely different experience each time you visit.

On my trip to the museum last weekend, I spent most of my time viewing the Dana Schutz exhibit: “If the Face Had Wheels” and Western American art collections. These art collections are complete opposites.

The Dana Schutz exhibit ends tomorrow – January 13th.I stongly suspect that most people that prefer the Western style of art are not going to like this exhibit too much and vice versa.

Denver Art Museum's MonetInsider tips:

  • I visited the museum last Saturday.    I was able to park in the parking garage across the street from the museum for $5.
  •
  • Inside the museum there is an area to hang your coat.  I felt that was a much better option than carrying it around.
  • The museum staff does not mind if you take pictures of artwork that belongs to the Denver Art Museum.   If I understood correctly, you can not take pictures of collections that are on loan – such as the Becoming Van Gogh or Rocky Mountain Majesty exhibit.  There are signs that remind you NOT that cameras are not allowed in those areas.

My Visit:

On my trip to the museum, I spent most of my time viewing the Dana Schutz exhibit: “If the Face Had Wheels” and Western American art collections.  These  art collections are  complete opposites.

The Dana Schutz exhibit ends tomorrow – January 13th.    I stongly suspect that most people that prefer the Western style of art are not going to like this exhibit too much and vice versa.

Dana’s work has a certain shock factor to it.   For example, one painting is of a woman peeing while cooking.  Another painting imagines what it Michael Jackson’s autopsy would have looked like.  This painting was done prior to his death.   In another painting a woman is depicted as giving birth, complete with the blood, while she is staring at a landscape photo in the hospital room.    For more information and a couple of photographs of paintings on display see:  http://www.denverartmuseum.org/article/staff-blogs/dana-schutz-talks-process-approach-artworks

I must admit her artwork is not easily forgotten.

The Denver Art Museum’s American Western Art collections were very enjoyable to view and more my style.  The newer Western American art is displayed on the second floor.  The Old West American art collection is located on the 7th floor.    On this particular trip, I found myself intrigued by the different variations of Fredric Remington’s Bronco Buster bronze.

Great photographs of some very impressive art. Thanks for sharing Sondra. Just wondering if you had the opportunity to see the King Tut exhibit. It was in Seattle for a few months and many people we spoke with said it's fantastic. Thanks again for the informational blog and cultural enrichment.

Happy New Year...2013.

Sondra, so you DID go see Van Gogh! What time in the middle of the night did you go? I just spoke about him last night to my husband. He is listening to a book on tape (CD, actually) called The Icarus Deception and it discusses art, but in response to how to deal with life, manage people, etc. I have always been an artist. One of the things he was telling me that he'd just listened to was, as with many artists, people will or WILL NOT like your work and will criticize it. If YOU love it, then simply move past the criticism, don't take it personally. I mentioned Van Gogh because he was so depressed and didn't comprehend what a great artist he was or would be and as we all know, committed suicide, never knowing how instrumental he would be in the art world.

Hi Sondra. 15 degrees would be a little to cold for me, but I am sure all those in Parker, CO are used to it by now. Excellent localism post for all those who love Art.

Wishing you all the Best in 2013! Go Broncos!!!

I applaud you Sondra for venturing out in the frigid weather you have been having of late. Art reminds me beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Dana Schutz' style does not sound like my cup of tea but I look at art and try to get in the mind of the artist. One man's treasure is another man's junk. If nothing else shocking or HEAVILY REAL ART will get you leaving the museum talking. Some of this shock value art in New York, the exhibits were protested like the use of feces or sacrilegious images. You have to keep an open mind (to a point) I would say. I liked your insider museum tips section. I am more a traditionalist (can you tell? ha ha) and like the Bronco Buster Bronze.
