This weekend, the temperatures in Colorado could be described as being bitterly cold. It is presently 15 degrees in Parker, which is part of the Denver metro area. If you are in the mood to get out, consider visiting the Denver Art Museum. Although Becoming Van Gogh is sold out for the remainder of the exhibit, the Denver Art Museum has a broad range of exhibits and activities that will appeal to wide variety of tastes. The exhibits are structured in a way that is meant to appeal to novices as well as person that are very knowledgeable about art. It is entirely possible to have a completely different experience each time you visit.
On my trip to the museum last weekend, I spent most of my time viewing the Dana Schutz exhibit: “If the Face Had Wheels” and Western American art collections. These art collections are complete opposites.
The Dana Schutz exhibit ends tomorrow – January 13th.I stongly suspect that most people that prefer the Western style of art are not going to like this exhibit too much and vice versa.

Insider tips:
- I visited the museum last Saturday. I was able to park in the parking garage across the street from the museum for $5.
- Inside the museum there is an area to hang your coat. I felt that was a much better option than carrying it around.
- The museum staff does not mind if you take pictures of artwork that belongs to the Denver Art Museum. If I understood correctly, you can not take pictures of collections that are on loan – such as the Becoming Van Gogh or Rocky Mountain Majesty exhibit. There are signs that remind you NOT that cameras are not allowed in those areas.

Dana’s work has a certain shock factor to it. For example, one painting is of a woman peeing while cooking. Another painting imagines what it Michael Jackson’s autopsy would have looked like. This painting was done prior to his death. In another painting a woman is depicted as giving birth, complete with the blood, while she is staring at a landscape photo in the hospital room. For more information and a couple of photographs of paintings on display see: http://www.denverartmuseum.org/article/staff-blogs/dana-schutz-talks-process-approach-artworks
I must admit her artwork is not easily forgotten.
The Denver Art Museum’s American Western Art collections were very enjoyable to view and more my style. The newer Western American art is displayed on the second floor. The Old West American art collection is located on the 7th floor. On this particular trip, I found myself intrigued by the different variations of Fredric Remington’s Bronco Buster bronze.
