What Does It Mean If

My Soap Dish Falls Off Of The Tile Shower Wall?

If properly installed, a soap dish should fit nice and snug for the life of the shower. A good bond between the ceramic dish and the dry wall or cement board will be maintained with an adhesive or cementious bed. If the soap dish is loose or has fallen off, this may be a sign of something worse.

A loose soap dish can be an indication of a moisture issue behind the tiles. In most cases you will not be able to see a problem until it was too late. The Soap dish off the wallreason for the soap dish failure is that the material has likely gotten soft and the dish no longer had a firm grip on a solid surface.

There may be other indicators of a problem too. Loose tiles are a good sign of a problem, and are generally the first to fail. The most common areas for tiles getting loose is along the first course, near the tub or shower pan. Often times the tile start to get loose and it gets caulked to hold it in place. This only masks the problem.

Where is the water coming from?

Sometimes the water get behind the tiles through the penetrations or cracks in the tile. More often the grout has begun the wear away over time and the grout sealer is no longer effective. Moisture in the grout line leads to small cracks in the grout, which leads to more water getting in. Sealing the grout lines or re-grouting can help maintain the shower wall surface.

Regular maintenance of the shower wall surface can help to keep the tiles and soap dish from becoming loose.

Hi Tom, Looks like the soap dish failure is a blessing in disguise. I am sure you will agree that if all that water build up behind the walls is not taken care of you will get worse problems than that like mold, etc, if it hasn't already like you said.... Best wishes for 2013!

Good explanation Tom on what can be lurking behind a tile shower wall.

Sarah & Les - We have seen some pretty bad wall interiors because the soap dish and tiles were constantly being "fixed". Most owners probably wouldn't consider the soap dish a good sign, but I think you are right, let's start over with a good shower surface.

Many believe that the shower is okay when there are signs that there is a problem John. I hope that some take the clues as a "call to action"

Hi Tom, Sometimes these things happen without any warning, since it is not always easy to find that leak that cause the soap dish to fall off the wall.

You are right Jerry. Years ago, I was showering at a friends house and my elbow bumped the soap dish and it fell off - there was no warning that a problem may be there.

Oh, good gosh, really?  OK, if I have to answer.  It's no longer a soap dish - it is a soap hole.

And when is a door not a door?  When it's ajar.

Tom, I love tile, but I sure do not like not knowing how they were installed for this very reason.
