Did you swim here? Better not try to do it now? Noble's Motel Searcy AR

This old postcard shows Noble Motel with a big cool pool!  Folks were sunning and enjoying it.  The pool is no longer at the motel and the motel is no longer called Noble Motel but everyone who has been around Searcy AR for any length of time remembers the motel.  And they remember the restaurant that was beside it, Bill's Grill.

But what happened to the pool!  I approached one of the relatives about this the other day and he expressed his agitation at his dad for filling the thing in.  He couldn't remember the year but he must have been just the age to enjoy a pool when it was filled in.

I have driven by and it does not look like there's enough room for a pool.  Here's the card.  Go back here also and see how the motel started!

And now, in case you are curious, here is the motel today.  They may have taken away the pool when they took away all that fashionable 50's wrought iron trim.

Absolutely NO MEMORY of that cool pool.  I did all my swimming at the Searcy Public Pool,  probably last swam in it around l953 or earlier.  Left Searcy in '61 so might the pool have been built after that?

The filling in of the pool was likely a business decision. Pool maintenance is expensive and a motel pool is a customer draw feature and if it didn't pay off, then fill it in.

I know may son and family always looked for a motel with a pool when they were on the road. They enjoyed a swim as soon as they checked in.

Based on the cars shown, I would date the pic as late 60's to mid 70's.

Anita, several on facebook have mentioned a pool for Searcy before this present Searcy pool.  I guess we need a little pool history.

Don, what you say makes perfect sense.  Maintenance would have been expensive and liability would have been a worry.  Folks then were not as sue-happy, however, as now.  Did you read about the lawsuit by the prisoner over his one roll of toilet paper per week allowance?  I also looked at the picture and it looks as if the lot may have been crowded with that pool.  Nice picture, though!

As I recall, the public swiming pool was located on the southeast corner of what is now East Moore Ave and North Moss St.  When we were growing up in the '40s it had been closed for several years but then reopened in the early '50s.  I never did spend much time there but do remember Bob Fuller spent lots of time at the pool after he came down with polio as it was good exercise for him. Maybe he or Anita can add lots more details.

Harold Gene, thanks.  The city talks now about how old the city pool is and how it needs replacing.  Wish you could come for Bob's induction ceremony on the 24th of this month.
