Movie Monday: Movie RemakesA Perfect Murder

With few exceptions, movie remakes are never as good as the original.  Here are some cases where, in my humble opinion, the remake was worth watching.

My Favorite Movie Remakes

1. Dial M for Murder (1954) Ray Milland and Grace Kelly vs. A Perfect Murder (1998) Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow

2. Planet of the Apes (1968) Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall vs. (2001) Mark Wahlberg and Helena Bonham Carter

3. True Grit (1969) John Wayne and Kim Darby vs. (2010) Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon

4. The Longest Yard (1975) Burt Reynolds and Eddie Fisher vs. (2005) Adam Sandler and Chris Rock

5. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (1974) Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw vs. (2009) Denzel Washington and John Travolta

6. The Karate Kid (1984) Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita vs. (2010) Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith

There are many more that I would like to see. In some cases I've seen the original and not the remake. In other cases I've seen the remake and not the original.  Guess I need to make another list. It could be a LONG one...movies I want to see!

I agree that movie remakes are not usually as good as the original. There are a few that were watching but others are not. Great article. Have a great 2013

Donna, True grit and The Longest Yards are some of my favorites. Dial M for Murder would have to be a good one too.

I like the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th Street better than the original. I'm looking forward to the anniversary release, in 3D, of Jurassic Park.

Randy~ It's hit or miss.

Debbie R.~ There are quite a few that I have yet to see.

Teral~ Didn't know they were going to do a 3D version. I'm sure that will be good.

Donna: Another great movie discussion!  I think my favorite remake might be John Carpenter's 1970's movie Assault on Precinct 13.  It was an urban remake of an old John Wayne/Dean Martin western called Rio Bravo.  It was interesting to see the different spin on the original story, with gang members instead of cowboy-outlaws.

Andrew~ I think I might have to put that on my Netflix list. I like John Carpenter.

Hi Sharon~ It's just a little bit different from the original. If you liked to first one, you'll like the remake.
