EDUCATION

How many thought education ended with “schooling?”  What do I mean by Schooling?  That is kindergarten to 12th grade or college years.  My term for that is schooling.  Upon embarking on a sales career or opening a business you must embark on receiving an education!  In most professions well at least in real estate you learn the laws and requirements to become licensed by the state or region you are practicing your craft.  Once you have passed the test then what?  You must know learn how to use your new craft to generate income, revenue or make a living.  NOW IS WHEN YOU BEGIN YOUR EDUCATION!

I spent thousands of dollars over the years investing in workshops, seminars, retreats, coaching, tapes etc.  In addition I went out of my way to learn who the people were in the areas I was working that were successful, and I would like to my model my business after and met them.  I have been selling real estate over 17 years; I teach on the subject, do some training at my office, done speeches to groups on the subject, and I STILL GO TO SEMINARS!  Your field is forever changing from the laws you abide by to the forms you need to the market environment you operate in.  It is not enough to get your license and just start selling!

Give you an example.  How would you feel if your doctor told you he or she had been practicing medicine 20+ years, but has never gone to a medical conference, read any updated medical journals or attended anything in the last 20+years!  My guess is you would not feel very comfortable.  Well why would (or should) a homeowner entrust you with what is probably their families single larges investment, and could effect what happens to generations of their families forever if you are not continuously educating yourself in your craft?

I believe it is imperative you go to and learn as much as you can particularly in the beginning.  Lets face it for what we are paid as agents we have very little required expense to start operating.  We pay our licensing fee, board requirements, and minimal office affiliation costs, but you compare that to a doctor or lawyer it is nothing.  These professionals often finance their education BEFORE getting into the business, not mention their place of operation costs such as rent, utilities, and staff.  If you were to start a franchise such as a McDonalds you are going to pay the franchise fees, and cost before you get a location, supplies, staff or anything!  You are then told NOT to expect to earn any profit for 5 years, and work the business yourself everyday!  There are people who get into the real estate business for less than $1,000 and cannot commit to building their business 6 months yet alone 5 years!

Since we do not have these types of cost it only makes since to invest your money into education.  One of the least expensive highest rates of returns to me is CD’s and tapes.  Turn your car of office into an ongoing learning center.  Feed your mind the food on a continuous basis you will need to succeed.  Listen I am telling you about this business straight.  It ain’t easy at all, but it can be very rewarding.

When I got into the business I thought a real estate agent drove around looked at the pretty homes with clients and got rich off of each and every home they sold.  I thought I would spend 30 hours a week or so in this business and I would be set for life!  WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!  It ain’t easy man.  It is not difficult either, but to be successful over the long haul you must treat it (and any other sales commissioned sales career) like a business not a job!  As you progress start with some sort of a mentor either company provided or someone you can work with (or under) within your company, with the intentions of graduating to some sort of coaching program.  I realize when I speak of coaching the first reaction is why do I need someone telling what to do or it is too expensive etc.

Tiger Woods makes millions of dollars a year playing golf, and additional millions of dollars on endorsements.  He has a coach.  Michael Jordan considered by many the greatest basketball player of this generation had a coach.  Top Ceo’s of major corporations have coaches, Tennis professionals, entertainers all have coaches.  What makes you so special you do not need one?  All the type agents in this business have some sort of coaching service they subscribe to trust me on that.

Education will give you the confidence to speak with clients and hopefully encourage you to move to our next topic with ease.  Can you guess what that is?  Yes you right.  Lets begin to talk about the “word.”  P-R-O-S-P-E-C-T-I-N-G
