Families relocating to Central Maryland to take advantage of the low unemployment and job opportunities, will be hard pressed to find a nicer area than Howard County to consider as their new home.
Columbia Maryland, developed by The Rouse Company, is the nation's most successful planned community. (PUD) What began in 1962 as 14,100 acres of rural land has become a city of more than 97,000 residents, spread over 10 separate villages, with 2,500 businesses, more than 60,000 jobs, 21 million square feet of commercial space and a wide array of social, cultural, educational, entertainment and recreational programs and facilities. Columbia is managed by the Columbia Association.
Columbia is usually in the Top 10 of best places to call home in the USA. In 2012 it was the 8th most desirable City.
With all the amenities and attributes there comes a fee. This is known as a CPRA fee. Many of the homes in Columbia pay this fee. For a single family detached home it could be a yearly amount as high as $1200. Add that to the expectation of paying an HOA fee in many of the residential communities also and that is a consideration that can not be ignored. Homes in these jurisdictions that are required to pay the CPRA fee have very rigid compliance requirements. In some communities you have to ask permission before painting your door a different color or putting up a fence or a shed. Some areas in Columbia do not allow fences at all.
One of the best kept secrets in Howard County is a delightful home that affords you all of the features of Columbia living, but without the high fees, restrictions and compliances. With the excellent Howard County schools and perfect commuter location : Baltimore a pleasant 20 minutes to the North, Washington DC 25 minutes to the South, Fort Meade 10/15 minutes East. BWI airport an easy 20 minutes and MARC trains and Metro stations close too, it has it all covered.

When we found our home at 8739 Mary Ln., we were pleased to find a single family home that was basically brand new (original owner was a single chef that worked in DC and had never even put furniture in the house, paint on the walls or even nail holes in the walls). The house was as if it had just been build. We also really loved that there was no HOA on a large, quiet lot in Howard County. The way the house is angled gives you a very large backyard and you're not facing any neighbors. Because the neighbors behind us have a forest conservation area - they can't really use their back yard so we've enjoyed all the space with the additional benefit of privacy. We quickly learned that our home was close to EVERYTHING!
We love our custom built deck with privacy fence and lighted posts. The backyard is very private with a tree lined conservation area backing up to our lot. We have enjoyed many backyard barbecues and family gatherings on the deck. During the cold months, we have also hosted many family gatherings in the dining room. My husband's family is large, so we have enjoyed everyone's company during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
We have made several home improvements since purchasing the home. None of the rooms had paint on the walls when we moved in, so we have painted all of the rooms in the house. We have also made upgrades in the kitchen by adding granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances. The mantel was our addition to the fireplace. Our biggest project was the custom built deck. My husband did all of the work from the creation of the deck plans to the selection of the materials and the detailed craftsmanship used to create the privacy screen. It is by far our favorite home improvement accomplishment.
Our neighbors are very friendly and most families have children with a wide range of ages (infant-preteens). We also like that it's a very small neighborhood tucked away on a cul-de-sac. No through traffic of any kind.
We love living in the Columbia area because we have 4 conveniently located Starbucks no more than 3 miles in any direction. We also love the dry cleaners, car wash, Royal Farms Redbox and drive through Dunkin Donuts, which are less than 1 mile away. We love the convenience of Lifetime Fitness. The facility is open 24 hours and has phenomenal equipment, classes and an indoor and outdoor pool and is a 5 min drive. Tons of fun for the entire family! Target, Lowe's, Home Depot, Wegmans, Wal-Mart, BJ's, Costco -- you name it - no more than 5 miles away. One of my favorite places to shop has been The Columbia Mall, which is less than 10 miles away. Some of our favorite restaurants in the area are Macaroni Grill, PF Changs, Cheesecake Factory, Chipotle, Potbelly, and Famous Dave's Barbecue. My favorite grocery store is Harris Teeter. I love saving money with coupons and my favorite trips to Harris Teeter involve their Super Double Coupons, when the store will double coupons up to $1.99!!! If you are looking for a specialty grocery store, then Wegmans, a two-story specialty grocery store, is only 3 miles away.
We moved to Howard County because of the schools. As an administrator at a Howard County Public School, I can attest to the exceptional quality of the teaching staff at each of the schools. Guilford Elementary School, Patuxent Valley Middle School and Hammond High School are the neighborhood schools. One of the best things about Guilford Elementary School is that the school has additional funding sources, which allow the school to maintain small class sizes and small group instruction that is tailored to each child's academic needs. |
