 Relocating To Nashville:

A Quick Survival Guide for Moving to Music City

Whether you’re a musician, an aspiring artist, a songwriter, or none of the above, thousands of people make a faithful pilgrimage to Music City to chase their dreams, start a family, or to simply live the enriched and culturally diverse lifestyle that this great city of Nashville has to offer. Being a Realtor and a Nashville native myself, I have seen family upon family flock to this glorious city to live the ”American Dream” with eyes and hearts wide open.

So if you are thinking of relocating to MusicCity for work, school, music, or to just live in a place where the people are friendly, the weather is great and the music never stops, then here is a quick guide to making your pilgrimage to Nashville a successful one:

Tip 1: Nashville Proper…YIKES!  - Learn the Surrounding Areas:  Nashville is a small city (approx. 500 square miles). You will quickly learn that the closer you are to downtown Nashville the cost of living is generally higher (depending on the demographic area). Rent, home prices, and gas have a tendency to be much higher. However, there are many surrounding areas within a 10 to 20 minute drive from downtown Nashville that have convenient access to interstates and offer everything you need that yield a more affordable lifestyle. Here are some other popular areas of Nashville you should consider if living in Nashville Proper is financially out of reach:

  • Spring Hill / Thompsons Station
  • Goodlettsville / Hendersonville / Gallatin
  • Hermitage
  • LaVergne / Smyrna
  • Murfreesboro

Tip 2:  Find the Right School:   Nashville has a strong public school system as well as an excellent private school system. In reference to Tip #1, finding the right school will likely reflect the area in which you’d like to relocate your family. The two links below will give you access and information to both Nashville’s public and private school systems.

Tip 3:  Polish That Resume! – Finding A Job? Piece-of-Cake!

For those who aren’t transferred here for a job, I’ve heard countless people who have relocated to Nashville mention how quickly they were able to find a job once they planted their feet here - that’s because Nashville’s unemployment rate of 8.4 % stands considerably less than most other metropolitan areas in the Nation! So polish your resume and get on Craigslist & because there are definitely jobs out there! Here is a link to the Tennessee Department of Labor to help you get started:

Tip 4:   Got Church?:“God don’t care which church you go to so long as you show up!”(Dolly Parton – From The Original Motion Picture Steel Magnolias) Perhaps this motto isn’t suitable for everyone; so no matter what your denomination is the link below will list some well known churches, synagogues, mosques, etc. that will give you the information you need to find the perfect place of worship for you.

Tip 5:   Moving Counts As “Exercise”, Right? – Finding & Getting Back Into The Right Gym: Despite the mental and physical wear-and- tear moving impresses on you it doesn’t quite cut it for exercise. So once all your furniture is in place and you’re kitchenware is unpacked and organized, the best thing to get you grounded is to hit the gym. This link will aide you in finding your franchise gym, or get you started in a new fitness center in the area in which you land in.
