Wilmette is on a Roll!
In April of this year (2010) Chicago Magazine's Dennis Rodkin wrote an article entitled "20 Best Towns and Neighborhoods in Chicago and the Suburbs." Wilmette is one of the suburbs that he felt fit the bill (other nearby suburbs were Lake Bluff and Glenview.) Wilmette offers everything that a suburbanite would be looking for, whether you are an unmarried person or a family with children.
Highly rated schools, great transportation, easy walkability, lots of restaurants, stores, beaches, outdoor activities and charm. Downtown Chicago is just a short train ride away. Homes are pricey here, but there is an ample selection of moderately priced homes, more so than the other North Shore villages. Wilmette has a small town feel, yet has several shopping areas including Plaza del Lago and Edens Plaza. The Edens Expressway skirts the western side of the Wilmette, plus there is the Metra commuter line and the "L". More than enough ways to get around.
On another note, Chicago Magazine again writes that five of Wilmette's schools were among the top 10 Best Public Elementary Schools in Cook County(out of 600 that were ranked.) The five schools were: Avoca West, Harper, Marie Murphy, Central, and McKenzie. The rating was based on ISAT scores, pupil-teacher ratios, and spending per student.
Today's (10/29/2010) Chicago Tribune published a statewide "Top 50 Schools" out of 3,000 schools that were assessed. Wilmette schools came in (#14) Maria Murphy and (#22) Romona.
