Indelibly inscribed on the portico of the United States Supreme Court building in Washington D.C. is the phrase “Equal Justice Under Law.”
Those four words carry a powerful message that tears into the sensibilities of justices, lawmakers, and citizens of every state and municipality.
Whether one is crafting, enforcing, or interpreting the law, the notion of universal application should override any inclination towards specific benefit.
It is not always an easy decision. Choosing “what is best for everyone” is often subjective and may be influenced by outside pressures.
Equality and fairness are often confused. There are times when equal justice under law may not seem fair at all.
But NO law is better than BAD law.
And I will always try to discern the difference!
