What do swimming flippers, popsicles, trampolines, Braille and earmuffs all have in common? They were all invented by kids!
So then why not have a day to celebrate this ingenuity. Add one more holiday to the calendar – today is Kid Inventor’s Day! Today was chosen for this holiday because it’s the birthday of a famous inventor and statesman, Benjamin Franklin, who was born on January 17, 1706. Benjamin was supposedly the kid that invented flippers when he was only 12.
Some 500,000 kids invent gadgets and games every year to make our lives easier – and more fun. If you haven’t seen ABC’s show “Shark Tank”, you’ve missed some really inventive and entrepreneurial kids and their unique products.
So if you’ve got curious or inventive little one, today’s your day to encourage them. Here are a few ideas:
1. Make a prototype with them. You can typically find all the materials and supplies you might need in your home or in a hardware store. Submitting the completed prototype to your child's school Science Fair is a great way to get them involved and passionate about their new invention.
2. Participate in an inventors program for kids. Lego has a great one called First Lego League. Lego based robots are one way to make your children excited to learn about science and technology.
3.Protect your ideas. If you think your kid has a home run idea, consider patent protection. You never know, you may have the next Bill Gates on your hands.
4. Give your kids some space. New home builders Tampa recommend designating a spare room or nook into workspace or craft center for homework and school projects. This area is a great place to keep supplies and materials organized. This creative workspace can be for the whole family, or strictly a kid zone. Decorate the room accordingly and hang an "inspiration board" on the wall for hanging up ideas.
Since we're on the topic of inventions, check out why many folks believe that Apple, Microsoft and Google will be the innovators of home automation in the near future.
Encouraging your child to invent not only boosts creativity, but it makes for valuable family time. Have fun with your kids today and enjoy Kid’s Inventors Day. You may even find a few hidden talents of your own along the way!
