Let's review a blog that I did quite a while back.

It had lots of beautiful kids posing on the front porch.

It has Mrs.Klyster Knox standing with them.  Here's the house today.

Don't you just love the big, wrap-around porch?

Anita, look up in your okd phone book and see who lived in the house when we were kids.  The house looks so familiar, but then it is the style of lots of houses in, or were, in Searcy.

Mary, way back then I think little girls were expected to wear little dresses to school.  No so today.  Little girls wear little pants just like the boys and they stay a lot warmer.  LOL  Perhaps the sleuths can answer your question.  I believe it is the first time anyone mentioned a kindergarten operated by Frankie Houston.  Betcha the church tore the house down, though, for church expansion.

Anita, you have a request from Mary Dunn and from Harold Gene.

Harold Gene, surely we can find that out.  Now I know that you can almost build rooms for the price of those porches!

In defense of Anita, think about what ya'll are asking. She doesn't have a digitized telephone directory so looking for who lived at 510 N. Main in the 40's and 50's means searching the listing visually for the address. An arduous task.

Wish I had scanned the directory but I only have pics of the pages. I remember we did look one time for the lowest telephone numbers but that's easier than looking for an address.

Here's the 8 lowest numbers:

# 1 Smith-Vaughn, #3:  the Jail, #4: Ivan Quattlebaum,  #5: E.D Davenport, 211 W. Center,   #6:  Person Feed Store, #7:  Searcy Flooring  and #8:  MidSouth Gas.

If you're looking for #2, we didn't find it.

We have it good today with digitized books where we can search using key words.

Don, you are just an old softie!  Anita can do anything!  She is all powerful in her way just as you are in doing our techie stuff.  # 6 Person Feed Store.  We just did that one, didn't we?  Whatever happened to MidSouth Gas?  And is 211 W Center still in existence?  I still think you need to come for Anita's speech for Bobby Scott Fuller next Thursday night.

Surmisng that the photo of the children was taken in the early to mid 50's (based on Monty's age) my guess would be that Mr and Mrs Knox still owned the house and perhaps lived there during that time.  IfsiArri suffering the house is the one I'm thinking it is, in the 70's and 80's it was changed to an apartment house.  I remember inspecting an apartment for a potential renter in a house at either that location or nearby.  Pretty sure it was that house.

Don't know what happened to that sentence.  It is supposed to read: If it is the house I'm thinking it is...

Somehow the sentence got mixed up with the words for spam prevention,

Mary, I thought yuu'd made up a new word with that ifsiarri and I didn't know it had to do with spam prevention.  LOL  There is an apartment behind the house that was a rental at one time and may still be.  There is also a house across the street that looks kinda like this one but I have never heard any history about it.  Don needs to hire Mr. Google and get both those pictures in one picture.

The 510 N. Main house in my '57 phone book is the residence of Joe Knox...phone 497.  Down in the next block is R.L. Knox, 607 N. Main, phone 97.

Mary, might you be thinking of Dot Beck's Kindergarten?  It was on Market Street and I THINK Barbara has blogged about it before.

Of course, I LOVE the outside of this house and would buy it in a N.Y. minute.  How can I see inside?  better look before I put my earnest money down.

Don I can't believe you still have that list of the phone numbers!  I'm glad you do, though.

Anita, No I am not thinking of Dot Back if you are referring to my question regarding Frankie Houston's kindergarten.    Frankie's kindergarten was long before Dot Beck.  I attended it at least part of a year probably 1947.  The only two things I remember are that her son, James was frequently there and Frankie was driving me home after a Valentine's party and I got sick and threw up in her car.

Many years later I had a stained glass panel made to resemble one of the windows in the house where the kindergarten was located.

BTW, since I live in NY I've tried to determine what a NY minute is and can't tell that one is any diffrent here than in Arkansas.  Tongue in cheek.

Mary, don't know where I learned that expression.

I've emailed my friend, Eliz. Capps, about the kindergarten.  James Houston was her first cousin (I think).  She'll know.  Having said that, she is also in NYC as I write, so it may take her a few N.Y. minutes to answer.

Mary, walk Mr. Google down those streets and see if the house is still there.  I asked Hubby about it and he does not remember.  I remember when I was hired as a school teacher that Mrs. Houston was on my doorstep in a NY minute (thanks for expression, Anita) and sold me a set of encyclopedias because I'd really need them while teaching.  They are still in my house in my bookshelf.

Mary, could you be talking about the historic home on Center?  Check picture at this blog.  I can remember when it was added onto sometime probably in the 70's.

Thank you, Barbara!!  That is the house!!  As I recall, the kindergarten classroom was upstairs.  I don't know if the rest of the house was a private residence or what.   Besides the stained glass in the front there is a window,,,square I think, on the side that seems strangely placed.  I believe it is on a stairway.

The Collinsworth name for the house jogs my memory in a different area.  Anita, Don, wasen't there a Miss Collinsworth, maybe Carrie, who taught?  She would have been a contemporary of Frankie Houston (or near). Could there be a connection between this house,  Carrie(?) Collinsworth and maybe Frankie Houston?

Mary, don't know the connection, if any, to the Collinsworth house and Frankie Houston, and I've yet to hear back from Elizabeth.  There WAS a teacher, Carrie Collinsworth....and a good buddy nurse friend of mine named Collinsworth (when we worked at Rodgers Hospital)....she lived in Griffithville, her husband was the Collinsworth.   Read Barbara's old blog on this house....I read that book she mentions.  Spooky, or eerie or something like that as I recall.

Barbara, I just gave away our old set of World Book Encyclopedias, probably l964.....I posted them on FreeCycle, White County.  A high school girl wanted them, and she seemed so thrilled to have them and grateful to me for giving them to her.   Encyclopedias are hard to get rid of these days.

Anita did the smart thing and just looked up Knox, I bet.

Anita, you should know by now that I have everything I have ever owned, inherited, borrowed or found and it's in little boxes arranged in alphabetical order  in the catacombs.

Mary, there was a Mrs. Carrie Collingsworth that taught Jr. High Science.

Anita and Mary, my memory of the book is that the Collinsworth girl also had roots in an old house in Griffithville and it is also in the book.  I searched history of the one you refer to, Mary, and the courthouse says it was built in 1895.  I remember Win Thompson (ex Pres. of UCA, I think) buying it and working on it until he left Searcy. He may have added on the huge back part but when you went to school there I'll bet it didn't have that large back part.  The people who own it now treasure it and pamper it and work on it all the time.  We in Searcy need to be proud of them.

Mary, Eliz. says Frankie Houston had a kindergarten on Moore St.   Does that ring any bells?

Thanks to Don for the pic. of our teacher, Carrie Collinsworth.
