Are you too busy with busy work? Cure: A walk in Garden of the Gods

In the book “First Things First,” Stephen Covey discusses activities that are important but not urgent.

These activities, which he calls Quadrant II activities, include:

  • Relationship building

  • Prevention (such as exercise, flu shots, oil changes, etc.)

  • Planning

  • Preparation

  • Education

  • Empowering others

Since these activities are not urgent, they too often get neglected.

Recently, I have found myself frustrated that I’ve been jogging at night in my dreams.   As much as I love running and yoga, I haven’t exercised in two weeks.

This afternoon, I planned to do the laundry and finish unpacking the boxes in my office so that I can start working on my taxes.   After all, who wants to do laundry on a Saturday night?   Plus, not having these boxes unpacked is really stressing me out.

After thinking about Stephen Covey's book,  "First Things First" and the important but not urgent activities,

I opted to go for a walk at Garden of the Gods, which is located here in Colorado Springs.  As result, I feel refreshed.

At Garden of the Gods it seemed everyone was involved in the quality Quadrant II activities.  They were exercising; they were spending time with friends and family; and they were enjoying the gorgeous Colorado afternoon which was at least 50 degrees warmer than it was last weekend.

This weekend, have you made time for some quality Quadrant II activities or have you found yourself being too busy with busy work?

Garden of the Gods

Sincerely,

“The Garden of the Gods” How appropriately named! Beautiful photos. I am sure it is much better in person. Lucky you!

Hi Sondra, Unless I hear otherwise before 10:00AM, I have the day off and hope to take advantage of beautiful weather at the coast and do some photography.

Ah, you are talking to a strong proponent of Important but NOT URGENT quadrant activities. People might laugh at me, but I try to live in that quadrant Sondra. There is a saying, if everyone did more of what they were supposed to be doing there would be a shortage of fishing poles. I have been to the Garden of Gods and you chose well grasshopper. Don't forget the lesson. Dust if you must, but the red rocks should talk to you often.
