What is the purpose of your blog?

Many of us are trying to develop the habit of blogging every day by participating in Lynn Friedman’s 2013 Big Blog Jump Start challenge.  If I am counting correctly, we are 10 days into the contest.

The last time I attempted to participate in this type of challenge, my quality suffered.   Lynn stressed that we should focus on writing a high quality posts.

One way of doing this might be to ask:

  1. What is the purpose of your blog?
  2. Does this post fulfill that purpose?
  3. Does this post reflect your voice - who you are?

(Can you find the rock climber in the picture below?)

Garden of the Gods Rock Climber

The purpose of my blog is to:

1.       Share the Colorado Experience

2.       Educate

(Here is a close up of the climber.  He has a purpose - to get down.)

Garden of Gods Rock Climber coming down

I use photographs that I have taken to share the Colorado experience.   I strive to share information that is educational to the general public and/or the real estate community.

(In Colorado Springs, we are fortunate to have the Garden of the Gods in our backyard.   Coming from a College Station, Texas which is very flat, I never thought that I would have the chance to photograph a rock climber.  It was interesting because it was hard to see him with the naked eye.  In fact, some of the people watching thought he was a girl.    Once I zoomed in with my camera, it was hard to figure out exactly where he was at.  )

Occasionally, I come up with a great blog post idea that would probably be very popular and receive lots of comments.  However if the post isn't in line with who I am or who I strive to be, I trash it.   For example, I strive to be a very positive person.  So, I avoid writing rants or posts that criticize businesses and their quality of service.

I like to watch the following YouTube video, which is based on a verse from the bible, because it reminds me of what I want my REAL purpose in life to be.   Although I'm not anywhere close to perfect, I want my Active Rain blogging efforts and everything else I do to fall in line with my real purpose in life.

What is the purpose of YOUR blog?

Sincerely,

Sondra:  I decided a long time ago that my purpose was to educate.  That might include several topics and also several directions as to who I'm educating at the time.  Being a Lender, I think that's my highest obligation.  It starts at first contact and continues beyond the Closing table.  The better my clients are educated (and my referral partners), the easier the process and more successful.  I think I lose sight of my mission once in awhile.  Get caught-up in the act of blogging.  Your post reminds me that it's necessary to focus and remember my mission ...

Nice post, Sondra.  Lately I feel like I'm writing just to write, and that's difficult.

Different purposes for different blogs.  Like most my consumer pointed blogs are to increase business.  And yes, sometimes that means sharing a vacation experience.  I've connected with people by something as silly as post about walking my dogs.  They were dog people.  They found my post, they called me, we had a consulation, they hired me, they bought a house.  Ironically THE house I mentioned I walked by for sale when walking my dogs.

Other posts, like this one perhaps in "talking to the AR community" I made friends here, friends I can maybe help, friends I can learn from, people who would not hesitate to refer a client to me.  People I know would take care of a client I refered to them.  (I generally make those kinds of posts members only) as I feel the consumer doesn't really need to know what I am saying to the AR community.

I like your blog theme of sharing the Colorado experience.  I guess, in some ways, I am sharing the experience of living in Maryland.

I always enjoy your photographs.  Best wishes for continued success.

People are busy and if it is not an easy photolog, video, something that saves them time and money in a helpful blog post with links, well, why should they follow it? And why bother hunting, pecking it. There is enough of that machined, blah blah blah on line, in life. You live in a neat state, son in last semester, a senior at Colorado College in C Springs. Other older son works at A Basin winters and skis his brains out when he is not at work. Neat state, friendly people. Image driving out with jeep to leave with son a few years ago and then flying back to Maine.

I have yet to participate in a 30 day blog challenge for the exact reason you mentioned - my quality would surely suffer. It would be hard for me to come up with that much content and while some random thoughts are definitely well tolerated and even enjoyed, I'm not sure that would work for me.

Love the photo, Sondra. Since our blogs are to promote our business, blogs that put down customers or make others look bad aren't productive at all. Everyone needs to vent now and then, but I hope professionals know that ranting in public isn't good business!

Sondra- love the photo's. You asked a great question, what is the purpose of your blog. My blog is hyper focused blog to help home buyers and homeowners in the Lake Ridge Virginia area.Lake Ridge is a small bedroom community about twenty miles south of Washington DC. This is where I live, play and work. I am passionate about the home values you here, and I want every seller to know...I will do my very, very best to help them sell for the most amount of money the market will bare. I learned long ago on Active Rain, if you can't compete with the big guys (humongous websites with deep pockets) farm on the internet. Share what you know, market updates on the communities where you like to sell. Consumers are searching and trolling for information about their neighborhood and values. Since I've done that business it outstanding!

Very good post.  Ultimately my blog is to generate business and connect with people that want to work with me.  Sometmes I forget about that and blog for comments and features, but those don't really bring in business.
