Ice Fishing in Minnesota - You Had Better Be Brave!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Don Sabinske, Sabinske & Associates Inc. 539MN

My dad and I had a pretty successful day on the ice yesterday despite the fact that the air temp was minus four and the wind chill was about minus forty.

The fish don’t mind the cold, and, apparently these two big boys were hungry.

It was too cold to let my son come out, but the “old man” is always up for a quick trip out to fish.

We will be back out on the ice today, too.  Even though it will be even colder, it might not be quite so windy.  We’ll see how it goes.

Have a great Sunday!

Filet it is !  Be careful,....we are just starting to have enough cold to bear a shanty....but  you usually have more than enough cold to go around...and now fish too...good luck !

Don, I think I see something in the 2nd picture that might explain the willingness to go out in that cold :)

Beauties! It would be a cold day in hell before you would get me out there on a cold day like that... lol, but I am glad you enjoyed!

This is more my cup of tea.

Don...there is something about sitting out in the cold in a shelter that is just surreal.

Don, I love fishing, but not in the freezing temps!   You have to be very hearty to fish at those temps!  Glad you had fun.

I love to fish but not where you are.  No way I could be that brave.  I just put on a jacket to read your blog.

You are brave. I love the pictures. Those are some big fish...pike or walleye? It looks like you have a nice hut to help keep the wind out, and the six pack probably makes it easier to tolerate the cold. Good luck today on the ice.

Hi Don - There were guys out ice-fishing here yesterday, without huts - the ice isn't that thick yet and we see few of those here anyway. I'm always amazed when I see people doing that, particularly when I think about the warmth and convenience of the fish department at Whole Foods. Not that I'd ever criticize - I've skied in -58 windchill weather - it's just a matter of what you love to do.

Don-Very nice, there's something special about sitting out in the freezing cold and tip back a few cold ones, I get it.

Hey Don.... I've never experienced anything like this.  Who knows maybe one day... Until then I'll catch my fish down at Red Lobster :)

FYI..... Not sure what's up I'm leaving comments and they seem to be disappearing.  Ron Marshall has been MIA from my blog scroll for weeks. I have to Google his name to find him.  Kerri says he's there... Well he's not showing up on my side of things.  I have gotten a few emails asking where I am, if I'm okay...I did a post mentioned your name as one that left a comment that you hadn't seen me.  Not sure what's up but if I'm NOT showing up on the blog scroll please let me and Kerri know.  Maybe we can figure this out sooner than later.

The fish are biting like crazy up here....mostly northern and perch, but we got a walleye or two, as well.  At least one that we could keep.

I am glad I was able to get a photo of my dad in this post.  It was so cold, the fish were frozen when we took them out of the lake!
