Farm Animals

I spent the day with horse property buyers who originally were a walk-in at Vernonia Realty.Pebble Cr barn and tree-Gayle Rich-Boxman 2013 All Rights Reserved

As they took their own photos around the property, I had a chance to “shoot some birds”.

I captured one very high up in this tree until I got too close and it took off. Not sure what this one is.Bird on Pebble Creek Rd-Gayle Rich-Boxman copyrighted All Rights Reserved 2013

I also had an opportunity to photograph an unusual rooster who had “disco pants” according to the buyer!

Later on the way home to Fishhawk Lake, I stopped and took a few more photos where there are more farms that border Hwy 47N outside Vernonia on the way to Fishhawk Lake. Here was a sweet face I couldn't resist.

Update! We've made an offer on the horse property--woohoo!!!

Gayle  You have a great eye and lens for pictures.  (Although I don't know about that 'sweet face'.)  It is obvious you love your job!  The largest sale I've had was from walk-ins...took me a week showing...before they bought.  Enjoy the day

I found out that my bird in the tree is a Gray Jay, according to my friend and neighbor, Cheryl, the "birdlover" and the  Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The Gray Jay (or Whiskey Jack Jay, I saw it lovingly nicknamed) is:

The deceptively cute Gray Jay is one of the most intrepid birds in North America, living in northern forests year-round and rearing chicks in the dark of winter. Highly curious and always on the lookout for food, Gray Jays eat just about anything, from berries to small animals. They may even land on your hand to grab a raisin or peanut. During summer they hoard food in trees to sustain themselves through bleak winters.

Years ago I was fishing in Northern Saskatchewan with my brother and we stopped at lunch time to cook up some of the amazing fish we'd caught.  Just as I was about to put a piece of fish in my mouth, this grey bird swooped down and ripped it from my hand.  (I have a fanatical fear of birds)  I then had to fend off a few more like Zorro with my fishing rod while my brother was collapsed on the ground laughing at the performance I was putting on!   I found out later that these birds were Whiskey Jacks!!   Don't ever remember seeing them in the 1000 Islands :)

Oh, Gary, nice to see you!!

Susan~Well, with that kind of fear, I'm wondering if you saw The Birds movie by Hitchock as a child?? That certainly could have created a fanatical fear. These jays, unlike the Blues, seem to be more friendly or shy. Hmmmm...maybe you got a bad batch??  I loved the story--thanks for sharing it, Susan! (And it was delightful that your brother had such a good time, I'm sure it's in your family history as a "favorite story" that is brought up time and time again.)

My attackers must have been from the Northern branch of the family and I'm sure they were starving!   Bitter cold up in that part of the country even in July.  And yes, with 6 older brothers I was forced to watch that movie and birds have been dive bombing and pecking my head ever since I can remember.  My parents thought they might have been after my waist length blonde hair for nesting ???   Who knows but now I keep a respectful distance from any bird and ask that it do the same :0)

I just love your photos BTW

Susan, it reminds me of  years ago, when I went to a retreat place called Breitenbush and went hiking by myself. This hawk divebombed me as I watched it and I literally looked eye-to-eye with it (and distinctly recall it's talons) as it came directly for my head and face. At first, I laughed and was somewhat incredulous that it meant BUSINESS. I literally had to duck as it truly was after me. I thought it was a one-time thing, but it kept coming at me! I even sat down to write about it in my journal and realized it wasn't going to give up. I had to beat feet out of the woods. Later, I mentioned this at the front desk, and it so happened that another young lady was there who'd had the same experience. Turns out that it went after women ONLY. Ha!

Hi Gayle,

Great farm animals and I really like the disco pants. Perhaps they grow them in the winter to keep their legs warm. Very unusual and cute as can be.

Hi, Cheryl! Gosh haven't seen YOU in awhile! Come visit--take your own photos!

Sondra, I tried to look this guy up and couldn't find an exact match. So I asked the owners. Well, they inherited him from the former owners and the husband said this:The rooster is a feather footed Bantam. Not sure of the exact breed, maybe a Barred Rock. He seemed to get along well with the hens. He was so funny!

Kristin~The disco pants comment was too good not to share! He actually kinda danced....

Bell bottoms or disco pants seems pretty accurate for the bird....and they can keep that look.
