Golf & "The Business" - Are you creating relationships?

By
Industry Observer with Maryland Department of Commerce

Well as many of us play the game, we know what fun and what a marketing tool that golf can sometimes be.  I use it myself to get some 1 on 1 time with my clients and to really show them how I am and how I conduct my business.  It isn't about giving away something for free.  That might get them there on the course or to the lunch table, but they will get a feel for me and know what I am about.  My goal is to create a relationship that is of the utmost importance in our business.  Build relationships with people in real estate services and don't be a "give away" specialist or give your clients to people that only give loads of stuff away.  It is up to you to create your team of trusted people, not just the guy who is going to give you some "gift" every once and a while.  It should be about quality, the service people that you provide for your customers reflect back on you and how you do your business.  A qualitly process creates happy clients and a referral network that keeps you in this business through every up and down time in the market.  How are you going to explain yourself to your customer when something goes wrong?  Are you going to tell them that they had a bad experience only because of using that certain person or service was to benefit your personal gain?  I think not....sorry for the rant but, now for a little fun for all your golfers.  Just a few sayings that a friend sent me that are good for a laugh, oh how true some of them are!

Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer

Golf! You hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins. And on top of that, the winner buys the drinks

"Golf is harder than baseball. In golf, you have to play your foul balls.

If you find you do not mind playing golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here's a valuable tip: your life is in trouble.

Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot rarely make a perfect shot.

The term "mulligan" is really a contraction of the phrase "maul it again."

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers ... neither of whom can putt very well.

An interesting thing about golf is that no matter how badly you play; it is always possible to get worse.

Golf's a hard game to figure. One day you'll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all you really stink.

If your best shots are the practice swing and the "gimme putt", you might wish to reconsider this game.

Golf is the only sport where the most feared opponent is you.

Golf is like marriage: If you take yourself too seriously it won't work , and both are expensive.

The best wood in most amateurs' bags is the pencil.

Let me know if it made you laugh or if you have a favorite!!!

Matthew,

Welcome to the group... to bad you are not in my area, I could use a free round of golf. :)  Sounds like you enjoy playing the sport.  I did enjoy the sayings that you provided... and you wonder why I don't take practice swings (don't want to waste the good ones for nothing.)

I have started a golf course review for AR and a website title 2AverageJoesGolf.com.  If you get the time check out the posts to see how they are written (the posts are here in the 19th Hole group for now, while I finish building the website). I am looking for other Average Joes across the nation to help write up reviews of their favorite, local courses, if they have the time and don't mind.  Let me know if you would be interested in being one of the Average Joes.

Best post I've seen in awhile, you tied in business and humor.  Thanks for the entertainment.  I can relate to all the quips, but its the truly occasional miracle (and Icould'nt overstate that if you tried) that just keeps me coming back.
