Prince William County Strategic Plan and Your Real Estate Taxes
On January 22, 2013 Prince William County will host the Strategic Plan Public Hearing.
There is a proposal to adopt the 2013-2016 Strategic Plan. This plan outlines the Goals for Prince William County for the next several years. On page 31 of the Strategic Plan we learn that this plan is required to "provide policy guidance for the County's budget and operating decisions." These goals are focused in five areas:
- Economic Development
- Education
- Human Services
- Public Safety
- Transportation
To accomplish these goals the county will need to raise revenue. Each of these goals requires funding. Some comes from the Federal government, State government, non-profit donations, business donations and of course from taxes collected from the residents.
One of the main tax revenue sources is the real estate tax levied on each property in the county. The amount of this tax in determined by the amount of funds the county needs to bring in to attain these goals. That is one reason to be involved and attend the public hearing on January 22, 2013.
The following are additional meetings scheduled:
- Proposed Budget - February 12, 2013
- Authorize Tax Rate Advertisement - February 19, 2013
- Budge Public Hearing - April 9, 2013
- Budget Adoption - April 23, 2013
If you want to see where your money is being spent check out the Office of Management and Budget’s website. Also check out the School Board's planned budget - that is where over half of your real estate taxes go.
