Moving Tips

A couple weekends ago I helped a friend move across town.  Even though her family only moved 10 minutes to a new home, she still found herself looking for lost items.  I personally have moved across the country and across town, and I am not sure which one is easier or harder.  I feel like when you move across the country you might be more prepared, better organized.  But across town you feel like you have a lot of time to do things, or move things, and little trips here or there won't hurt.  Whether you are going 10 miles or 1000 miles, here are some tips on moving.

1. Write it down- keep a small notebook or use your smart phone and make lists of everything you need to do.  Not only make lists, but give yourself deadlines to complete them by.  Having your mail forwarded can be done in about 5 minutes online.  Start off doing the little things that might not take effect until later on down the road, but they are good to get out of the way now, like forwarding your mail.

2. Think about your pets- If you have pets you need a plan for them on moving day.  Even if you are moving across town they probably need to go somewhere during the move.  You would feel terrible if Spike or Fluffy got out while your friends were moving your TV into your new home.  Make a plan for a pet sitter, or a day at the doggie daycare for your 4 legged friends.

3. Keep track of paperwork- There will be many times during your move you will wonder where you put something, say like the moving truck contract.  Keep a folder in a designated spot and anything move related will go in there.  Also, write your new address down on the inside of the folder, so you will have a quick reference when you are on the phone with someone.

4. You can never be too prepared- Sure you may love looking at those old family photos hanging in the hallway, but guess what, you will enjoy them in your new home, too.  Take down and pack away anything and everything your realistically will not use before your move.  Your movers, whether friends or paid workers will thank you for being organized!

Moving can be stressful, no matter how prepared you are.  But using these tips can help you not stress so much and actually enjoy your new beginning!  Happy moving!
