MALE OR FEMALE DOCTOR WHATS YOUR PREFERENCE

By
Industry Observer with people first-then business feedback-input specialist

Now this is a literally sensitive subject for many I know. It makes itself known at an early age too and for some it is a very serious subject and for others of no concern. I have personally experimented with both male and female doctors and I have noticed very little doctoring distinctions

WARNING: VERY MILD SUGGESTIVE INNUENDO AHEAD

It is the patient that usually has the consideration. Now I will go first and share my experience with two female doctor types. I always had a male doctor if at all. I don't like doctors as a group. There is nothing personal involved. I just like to command my own well-being and when I need professional help....I seek out a Doctor.

YES TO PHYSICIANS ASSISTANT

SO MANY YEARS AGO...This one time they didn't have any immediate openings for the regular doctor and I said I will take what you have open right away as I needed it for a job clearance. Waiting until the last minute caused some stress but I was told they can get me in right now if I agree to a PHYSICIANS ASSISTANT...No problem sez I...Lets do this

I HATE THE PATIENTS GOWN

It's a physical and you have to go naked except for the bed-sheet type gown that only comes in extra-large and remains open in the back and loose throughout. This is understandable. I get this thing on and patiently wait until I hear footsteps approaching the door and I thought good...I can get out here...

AHH...WRONG ROOM LADIES....

In walks in two young girls. One is holding a chart of a sort and the other has the stethoscope. Now I didn't really care about the whole thing until this happened and I had to assess it within seconds. Apparently my eyebrows must have moved upwards because the lead Physicians assistant said the following:

HI...MY NAME IS XXXX and I WILL BE YOUR STEWARDESS FOR THIS FLIGHT

Hi my name is xxxx and this is xxxx and I understand you are here for a physical. I said my howdy do's and she said, if you are uncomfortable with being seen by a woman, let me know and we can schedule something else. Now I was in a hurry and I already thought this through within seconds...

HAVE YOU EVER HAD YOUR LIFE FLASH BEFORE YOU

I knew they would be visiting with my whole body, asking me questions and having me even touch my toes. I realized that perspective, purpose and professionalism played a huge part in this process and the only question for me was can I handle this professionally? The answer was without hesitation...YES. I said to her...no problem let us proceed.

OH...YOU BROUGHT A FRIEND?

She sez..is it alright for xxxx to be involved as she is in training. The way I figured it was if you are in for a dime, your in for a dollar and said sure you can stay and invite anyone else while you are at it. This was a weak attempt to be humorous and failed because she said...Are you sure?

JUST TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO

I went into my professional mode, said YES and the examination commenced. All procedures were followed, delicate questions were answered and a tour of my entire body was conducted. It is interesting to hear two people discussing your body while pointing too. At no time was anyone off their focus, was there any awkwardness and here is the true test of it all...

We even had eye contact many many times. Everyone conducted themselves very well.  I shared all that to lay the foundation for anyone who-wishes to answer the title of the post...Male or Female Doctor, what is your preference?

Beth...yes to smiling and lots of it too...One day a friend at the time describes a colonoscopy procedure he just went through and I stayed silent while listening. When he insisted on my comment...all I said was...SHOOT ME..I am not doing that....He countered, I cut him off and said...fire when ready....I am done here

Hello Sharon...It what could be a potentially uncomfortable situation is offset by the people involved trying to make it comfortable. I know they go over this in medical school but spend that much time on it....Fascinating subject

Hi Richie, earlier in life I might have cared more about the gender or my doctor, but with experience I have found the greatest criteria is how long the doctor spends asking questions and showing concern.

Our best doctor was a young lady who spoke with such a strong Russian accent that it too for ever to understand her, but she did spend the time and ask the questions and nag me about what she wanted me to do... She showed that she cared.

Then she moved to another city, and her replacement, spent a total of 2 minutes to give me an annual exam this past year, I wont be wasting anymore time on him either.

Richie, my current (and only) cardiologist isn't much of a talker.  He is male, and an older gentleman.  I either don't find out much, or I have to ask and ask the questions.  He seems knowledgeable enough, but I still don't feel that when I am seeing him he is supremely interested in my welfare.  He tells me I need my Aortic valve replaced, but he just does not inspire confidence.

This is all through Medicare, as that is the only insurance I have.  I will be 69 in a few weeks.

Several months ago, at the urging of my cardiologist, I went to an internist, a woman of about 40 years old.  I was very impressed with her knowledge, and also about the length of time we spent.  I felt more interest in my welfare.

In general, although obviously I want the most knowledgeable doc treating me, in general I prefer a woman.  I just feel more relaxed, and more likely to ask questions.

Bob...yes to your thinking and commenting...It is the bottom line. I wanted an exam so I could get it to my employer at the time and I wanted it done professionally, efficiently and timely....but also in a caring fashion too

Hello Ms Karen...very nicely shared and thank you...It is a business yet people don't want to interact on that level. They want something else as your comment reveals and it is understandable too. After all, if something is discovered that is a life changer, it needs to handled. One never knows when this will come up. Bedside manners apply...thank you K

Richie, you are very welcome.  When posts like this are written, I think I need to try to share myself as much as I can.  I think adding to the dialogue that the comments can become is very important.  It's more of that "do unto others" stuff... if that makes sense.

Richie, you have such a "lady-like" way with your words... especially the "suck marrow and spit out the bones" part of your prose.  Perhaps that could be the title of your next book?  Or... mebbe not.  LOL.  Happy Wednesday, and thanks for the kind words.
