Strawberry Hill in Glencoe, IL

Strawberry Hill, Glencoe ILStrawberry Hill in Glencoe, IL is a subdivision that lies in the western side of Glencoe, abutting the beautiful Cook County Forest Preserves and the Skokie Lagoons. After the main part of Glencoe was developed, this side, which was then called the Skokie Marsh, was drained and built over.

Modern home in Strawberry Hill, Glencoe IL

Strawberry Hill compromises approximately 160 acres and was opened up for development after World War II. The driving force behind the architectural style here was Greta Lederer, who designed the newly popular bi- and tri-level homes that so dominate the area.  New homes were advertised for $15,000 at completion in the mid 1950s (I had a client who was selling on Sycamore and had a Chicago Tribune page from that time that had one of the ads.)  These homes all have a distinctly contemporary look.

Strawberry Hill, Glencoe, ILStrawberry Hill is an affordable subdivision,
a respite from the  multi-million homes being sold in other areas of Glencoe and the North Shore.

Because of the affordability of this area, many homes have been torn down and replaced by larger and more expensive homes.

Hohlfelder Road runs along the west side of Strawberry Hill.  The road was named after a German pioneer family who migrated to Glencoe in 1856. Johan Chistoff Hohlfelder came to Glencoe to work on a farm and saved his money to purchase 25 acres of land on what is now known as Hohlfelder Road.  He later purchased another 70 acres and planted more than 75,000 horseradish plants from the roots he brought over from Germany.

Also along the western side where the Forest Preserve and Skokie Lagoons lie, there is a bicycle Strawberry Hill, Glencoe, ILtrail that goes for miles in either direction. This end of Glencoe has an almost rural feel with deer grazing along the side of the road. In reality, the expressway to downtown Chicago is just minutes away and the Chicago Botanic Garden is less than one mile.

Very well done, Margaret!  Informative and interesting.  Love the historical background concerning the area and the architecture.  As an appraiser, I always felt the communities that had a variety of prices and styles of homes were the healthiest, plus just more interesting.  With a mix of rural feel and close proximity to the City, Strawberry Hill in Glencoe ... has it all.

Gene - thank you.  Glencoe is interesting because it does have a varied architectural style.  It's always fun to look into the history of an area.

Joan - I know - those were the days!
