Skating Prohibited on the Kentlands and Lakelands Lakes

The frozen lakes may look inviting, but please do not attempt to play or skate on any of the lakes in Kentlands and Lakelands.  The ice could give way and you would fall into freezing water!  If this were to happen, it could prove fatal before rescuers could reach the scene.  Talk to your children about the extreme danger of playing on the ice or the rocks surrounding the lakes.

Even though the ice looks stable, our lakes double as a storm drainage network. This means that the level of water under the ice may be lowering.  In addition, the water is constantly moving under the ice, thus further contributing to a very dangerous environment.  An adult can lose motor skills within a minute of being in freezing water and it's even faster for a child.

If you see anyone skating or playing on the lakes, please call the police non-emergency number at 301-279-8000 to report this activity.

Roy, if authorities deem ice as dangerous, stay off it. Wow, that would be tragic to drown out there or get trapped.

Roy, I would never have thought about the ponds shifting the ice because of the flowing water.  Great information.

Roy, this is a very timely post. While I was in college, the President of the college had a son 7 years old that wandered out on the ice and never made it back to shore. I've never forgotten the grief the family and the entire campus felt. Thanks for sharing this important information.

Roy, It really scares me when lakes and ponds get iced over and children especially think they can skate on them. Unless it was way up north where they freeze solid I would not recommend it at all.

When there is ice on ponds and lakes, sometimes the temptation is great to go out on the ice.  Those that fall into freezing water just have moments to be saved.  Please share this kind of warning to those in your community if this might be a safety issue.

A good reminder to be careful on the lakes.  What may look solid may not be.  Especially when we get a bit of a thaw and then a freeze!  Your photos are beautiful.. and it makes me long for spring!

This is certainly a parent's responsibility to educate their children of the danger. Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen, great to see the local community step in and warn folks.
