Skating Prohibited on the Kentlands and Lakelands Lakes
This is extremely important information if you have lakes or large ponds near your home. Roy Kelley, Montgomery County, MD, RE/MAX Realty Group provides information on how dangerous playing or skating on ice is for both children and adults.
Skating Prohibited on the Kentlands and Lakelands Lakes
The frozen lakes may look inviting, but please do not attempt to play or skate on any of the lakes in Kentlands and Lakelands. The ice could give way and you would fall into freezing water! If this were to happen, it could prove fatal before rescuers could reach the scene. Talk to your children about the extreme danger of playing on the ice or the rocks surrounding the lakes.
Even though the ice looks stable, our lakes double as a storm drainage network. This means that the level of water under the ice may be lowering. In addition, the water is constantly moving under the ice, thus further contributing to a very dangerous environment. An adult can lose motor skills within a minute of being in freezing water and it's even faster for a child.
If you see anyone skating or playing on the lakes, please call the police non-emergency number at 301-279-8000 to report this activity.
