A Sales Lesson From A Strange Old Source

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with The Real Estate Investment Institute 1retiredsage

The year was 1964 as a high school sophomore I lived with my parents. My basement bedroom gave me lots of privacy and the room next door was converted to my darkroom. I had bought a black and white television set at an estate sale, the huge thing had a round tube squared off on the top and bottom it weighted a ton. I got 3 channels 3! I had hung it to the ceiling over the foot of my bed. I had cut off it’s speaker and had wire running to another next to my head board and one more to my darkroom so I could fall asleep listening to Johnny Carson or listen on the many nights spent in the darkroom.

I tell you this because I probably heard or saw this show live. I don’t remember it, but stumbled over today on YouTube.

There is a great sales lesson in here, you’ll know it when you hear it. I missed it at the time, but while I sold allot of photos and regularly sold ponies I didn’t consider myself a salesmen. (The neighborhood kids loved me, their parents felt differently. For the record if you want to sell a pony let a local kid name it, teach him to ride it and then announce you’re selling the pony, works every time.)

Little did I know 4 decades of sales were in in my future. So back to the future:

Michael J. Fox looks so young here Bill. I like the deflecting of questions with Johnny. Yep I really want that house, he says that at all the houses. Crafty dude, or his agent was...

Bill A, OK I give up. What is the sales message? I can see the "how not to negotiate" message.

BTW Where did you get the ponies?

Bill, Mr R.

The lesson is in the business agent's quick recovery from the seller's gaff.

I'd buy the ponies at the accution in Shipsawana, Ind about 100 miles from home. They'd keep my horse company for 3 to 12 weeks. I'd pay between &7.50 and &50.00 for them then sell them for $150.00 to $300.00.

Yes Bill, a real sales professional always answers a question with a question. MJF has a home up here in CT in Litchfield county and is often seen with his family shopping at the local grocery store.

Ed,

I teach the same thing, but caution some questions are best ignored and others should get short kirt answers. Not to mention those that should just be answered.  8>))
