“Foodie” Fridays in Austin
Planning a night on the town this weekend? But, you want something casual and maybe a little different. How about mixing some old Austin with some new Austin? I’ve got a place to start the evening out with drinks and some light fare; then move on to an Austin icon for a taste of old Texas.
1. CLIVE BAR http://clivebar.com/
To quote one patron: “Think of a ski lodge in the middle of Texas and you’ll start to get an idea of the vibe here.” Got your attention yet? Located in the Rainey Street section of town, a vibrant, fun and off beat area of town that is the new hot spot in Austin. If you like beer, Clive’s has a great selection of local brews on tap and by the bottle. They also have wines and specialty cocktails if that’s what you are in the mood for (try the Moscow Mule!). Clive Bar has the laid back yet elegant atmosphere really going for it with vintage looking glassware and quilted white leather chairs combined with deliberately distressed looks set off by rustic woods. There’s also a sprawling outdoor patio area, covered and uncovered, for relaxing outside. Or, check out the Mezcal Bar, a windowless tiny stone building on the south of the patio yard behind Clive’s where you’ll find flickering candles and small batches of mescal along with the evening’s chosen cocktail. It’s referred to as a special, secret place that can become yours and they invite to go in and try the magic.
After you’ve experienced Clive Bar and worked up an appetite, how about moving on to an Austin icon?
2. IRON WORKS BBQ http://www.ironworksbbq.com/
In order to appreciate Iron Works, you need to know just a little about its history. Originally an ornamental iron works shop, this little tin building was converted into the Iron Works BBQ in 1978. Shortly after it opened, it was registered as a historical site by the State Historical Commission honoring its founders – Fortunat & Anna Weigl. Fortunat and Anna moved to America in 1913 from Bavaria, Germany with their 2 sons, Lee and Herbert. They loved the stories of the wild west that they used to read to their children in Bavaria, so naturally they headed for Austin. Discovering a love for iron works, Fortunat, laying out $20 as a down payment, started his new business Weigl Iron Works here in Austin. In June, 1935 one of the worst floods Austin has ever seen raged through the city. They were forced to cut out floor boards to scrape massive amounts of mud in the basement. These cutouts can still be seen as well as the 7 feet flood scars along the walls in the dining room with the words “Flood stage, June 5, 1935” written above them. The Iron Works BBQ is a family owned and operated business that has been serving real Texas BBQ in a country atmosphere since that opening in 1978. Celebrities such as Kevin Costner, Leonardo DeCaprio and Jay Leno have frequented Iron Works. Stop in for lunch or dinner and enjoy great BBQ plates, sandwiches, salads or buy it by the pound. Their real Texas chili (no beans) is famous here in town. You can’t beat having Texas BBQ in the most historic location in town where the ambiance makes it one of the coolest places to take visitors or get your fix of meat! This is a true historic highlight for the city of Austin.
