PROTECT OUR PETS AND OTHER PETS TOO! BRING THEM IN FROM THE COLD

By
Services for Real Estate Pros RS274017

Protect our pets from the coldPlease take a look around when you are out there showing homes over the next few days during this freezing cold and help protect our pets.

Some people who consider keeping their pet tied outside forget that in this cold they need to add extra floor cover to the dog house and at least put them in the garage over night when our nights are below zero degrees like they are right now and for the next several days.

Nothing upsets me more than when I drive around and I see dogs tied outside without shelter and without water. You can tell they are not tied out for short periods of time because there are paths well worn in the snow or in the grass around them.

So please, do me a favor when you are out and about over the next few days Keep your eyes open for a neglected pet.  If you see one, please call the proper authorities in your area.  Thank you so much!

I can't even imagine keeping a dog outside in a cold climate. I just came back from Puerto Rico where it seems like all animals are routinely kept outside, but, of course, it's a different story in a warm tropical climate.

Hi Jill, Some people still do and that is sad.  A little common sense sometimes is hard to find.

If you have a dog and it is cold, you should bring them inside, but you could also heat the garage or shed and keep them there.  Be careful with space heaters, cords, etc.  It needs to be dog proof.

Roger, Good points. Yes, any place that is warmer than the below zero temps we have had a lot of this winter. Thanks!

Dear Bobbie,

Unresponsible pet parents should not have them. I love pets, but some summers, I am barely home for weeks, which would be cruel for a pet, who does not understand that we have to strike, while the iron is hot.

Contacting the authorities in our parts is akin to putting a note in a bottle and dropping it in the lake. They simply don't care. Dozens of people over the years complained of a German Shepherd in our town who was tied out for years. It IS against County ordinances but - who cared? NOT law enforcement, that was for sure.

What I have to wonder is why anyone would take a pet or keep a pet if they're just going to tie them outside and forget about them.

After working in rescue for a few years I have some terrible stories about the things humans do to dogs and cats... I quite often wished I could turn the tables and tie those humans out in a yard with no shelter for a few years.

My lab, Zeke, stays inside with us all the time...he is such a good dog. I would definitely call if I saw an animal out in the cold or heat.

I can't imagine a pet owner leaving their pets out in nasty weather, could you? People who subject their pets to nasty weather or environment aren't pet owners because pet owners have compassion, love and understanding, don't they?

Dorte, I understand that and I sure agree. Irresponsible pet owners should not have them.

Marte, I agree. If you are cruel info to do "those things" to a poor defenseless animal then you deserve the same. I cannot work in helping out animals because what I would witness would be to much for me to bare, the tragedies of it all.  Government does not do much be at least we know have a few agencies in the area who can when you report animal abuse.  It takes time to find them but I have been lucky enough in some areas to find someone who can and will help.  Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Kimo, You would think so wouldn't you but there are far too many people who do not think that way.

As the "mother" of an abused dog, I get it. And I've been know to call the animal control people when I've seen neighbors not properly caring for their pets. If we don't fight for them, who will?

In Southern California we are pretty lucky. Very few cold, cold days/nights. But even here, and with a warm dog house, the dog is in when it's remotely chilly.

Hi Karen, I can imagine. If they are always used to warm the chilly can be enough of a temp difference they need to be brought in.  You probably have to worry more about them being left out in the heat to much.

Hi Bobbie,

Thanks for writing this post and thanks for being an animal advocate!! I'll never understand how anyone can leave their pet out in the cold and not feel guilty, especially on the east coast! It's sad, but I guess some people have no sense of compassion or empathy for other living beings : (

All the best to you this year & have a great week ahead!

Gina

Hi Gina,

Thanks so much, appreciate your support.

I don't understand it either and it really upsets me and kinda why I put the blog out there, so that others would keep an eye out for our Pets too.  As you can see from the comments, there are plenty of us out there that care.

Thanks so much.  You have a great year and week ahead also!
