The year was 2010 and one of our countries finest was on a tour in Afghanistan in a JAG unit. He was coming home and wanted a condo in the fair city of South Burlington, Vermont. Well I took the job as a buyers agent armed with my laptop, a good digital camera and my buyer’s military phone code.
The Search: It was not very hard because I had a definitive price range that narrowed it down. Even further was the criteria of two bedrooms, 1.5 baths and a 1 car garage or carport.
I would send the links to him just like any other buyer. He would in turn let me know which ones were of some interest. I would preview them and after obtaining permission take extra photos; then send a report and the photos.
Narrow it down: When we got it narrowed down to four I revisited them and went a but further on the photo detail showing close-ups of areas I felt were important.
Pick one: After it was down to the wire he asked me for advice and with consideration I gave my advice. He selected one (actually the one I would have purchased if it were for me) we wrote an offer and negotiated a price.
Returning State Side: I handled the arrangements for the inspection, the appraisal all the usual suspects and with his very competent communication skills we had not one issue. (Did I tell you that I love working with the military? Decisive, task driven, honest, precise communicators... love it) Well When he was due to be home I had the place all cleaned up and ready to go.
Worried? Well I was a little apprehensive; after all I had just picked out a house for someone thousands of miles away and closed with remote POA. (the attorney, not me) but I was pretty confident it was a good fit.
I got the Bravo Zulu: I found him a home and that’s all I could ask for.
Well folks that is just about the end of the story. Can’t stretch that out anymore.
Gotta go, up at dark thirty.
