San Antonio military to get a bump in BAH allowances for 2013
The Basic Housing Allowance has come a long way since I retired from the military services, but it's great to see that our service members and families are getting some nice increases to assist them with off base housing. The rental market is very active in San Antonio, and with these increases our military members are sure to find some great places to call home during their tour in our lovely city. How is the BAH determined for San Antonio TX? The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is based on geographic duty location, pay grade, and dependency status. The goal of BAH is to provide accurate and equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian housing markets- which vary widely throughout the country- and around the world. The BAH is payable when government quarters are not provided. Each year the BAH tables are released in mid to late December.

Basic Allowance for Housing rates across the country increased for 2013! The 3.8 percent increase isn’t due to one single factor- rates are based on the combination of local San Antonio TX costs for rent, utilities and renter’s insurance for housing, so market fluctuation of one or more of those factors in a given location will affect BAH rates.
Luckily for anyone in the military, any active duty service members who might see a drop in BAH for their market will have their BAH protected. This is due to the "individual rate protection," adopted by Congress over a decade ago.
