442 IS the New Area Code in Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, Encinitas, Ramona and Julian in addition to 760

Yes, it’s true.

442 is the new, and correct, area code in Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, Encinitas, Ramona and Julian, in addition to 760. So San Diego now has 4 official area codes – 442, 760, 619 and 858.

442 is new area code in someNorth San Diego County communitiesWhile the 760 area code was originally created in 1997 from the 619 area code, a major change was made in the 760 code back in 2009 when the overlay was created due to the shortage of telephone numbers and it was proposed to change many of the 760 codes to 442.

Because of the outpouring of public protest around changing the code from 760 to 442, officials decide to add the 442 code as an overlay (both codes co-existing in the same area) and it would be an option. But they required 760 users to start dialing 10 digits.

Now, because of a worsening shortage of 760 telephone numbers, the 442 area code is being formally implemented as the only option for a new number at multiple locations in the 760 area, the largest at the Palomar Health Center in Escondido with 5000+ employees.

Be aware - Residents and businesses requesting new phone numbers will more than likely get the 442 area code.

Hi Jeff, I hadn't encountered this new area code. I am glad they are allowing the two ACs to run parallel. But I would bet it won't be long until it changes and people have to change their numbers.

Dial 10 numbers??

We've had to do that for more than 10 years.

William - well with the government dealing with this sort of thing I would not be surprised. There are people I have run into recentlty who were not aware of this at all, and I only learned recently

Lenn - yeah we were pretty lucky. A number of years ago the town I live in didn't even have to dial more than the last 4 digits. What a shock that was to change

I think the overlay has been around for a little bit, but really I cannot think of a single person that I have dialed with a 442 area code.
