The forecast said we'd see the sun today, so far it remains hidden. Yesterday was a delicious mix of frozen rain, sleet, ice and other assorted crystalline objects all over Western North Carolina...delicious anyway if you are a penguin, polar bear or reindeer! Leslie said it best on the tense drive home...so far this winter, we've mainly gotten the ewwwww of winter and not so much the pretty.
By the time we arrived in Balsam, the temperature had soared to 30 degrees from the morning's 19 degrees and the solidly iced driveway from that morning had thawed to just partially iced. The crystalline mix continued to pepper us with its icy pellets however and an hour later we were back to slip sliding away. There is NOTHING like having to walk dogs on icy pathways. Not only was the blacktop icy but so was the potty ground...no sure foothold anywhere. I'm so glad this doesn't happen very often, in fact, I can only remember this kind of icy stuff maybe 3 times in the last 20 mumble mumble years.
However...all this whining isn't meant to indicate that the trees encased in ice isn't in a way perversely gorgeous. Once the dogs were put back inside, I gingerly approached the bits of frozen yet living greenery to preserve in digital foreverness.
As my fingers and toes lost sensation all I could think about was the song, "Baby, It's Cold Outside". When I searched YouTube for just the right video, oddly enough a scene that I don't remember from Buddy the Elf was my favorite. At least when my brain hums the tune now, it's chuckling.
