So kinky may be a relative term. One person’s kinkiness may be another person’s normal. I am not the one to judge.

But there are appropriate times for your kinkiness, kinky are you?

Kinky are you? Chelan Home Inspections

When I am doing a home inspection I try to get a feel for how the HVAC system is performing. Do I have areas in the home that seem to have little to no air flow at the register. I make a mental note so when I am doing the flex duct inspection that I can look for any issues that may explain the lack of performance at a register.

Here we have a kinky little detail.

Kinked HVAC Duct Wenatchee Home inspection

Duct installation should be performed in a manner to provide good air flow. Air is a fluid and as such is affected by friction, bends and restrictions like water.

The performance of your heating and cooling system will be greatly affected by a poor installation.

Duct bend radius Wenatchee Home Inspection

The bend radius at the center line of ducts should be equal to or greater than one duct diameter. The duct should not bend across a sharp corner of building materials such as joists or truss supports. Sharper bends increase pressure drop significantly and reduce airflow.
If a flexible duct is not fully extended, the friction rate increases proportionally with the compression. Care needs to be taken to minimize sagging or snaking of the duct between supports and minimize pressure loss.

Your systems performance will be dictated by many things but your ducts have one of the greatest influences on the system.

Great post!  For those of us amateurs, this is good information.  As a green realtor, this is also a topic I discuss regularly with my clients since ducts can be leaking as well!  Great post!

Ha!  Thanks for the comic relief :)

But in all seriousness, this is so true and amazing for resource conservation!  People tend to forget about one of the most crucial operating aspects of their home.  Thanks for the reminder!

Great Post!

Don -- then they wonder why they are cold all the time, and can't get the temperature to be the same through the house.

Richie, Exactly.

Jan, A properly set up and installed HVAC system has a great impact on the energy usage in a home.

Audry, We all need a little giggle here and there. But very true.

Steven, This is so true. I find many homes that have issues in balancing heating/cooling.

I'm glad you mentioned the compression of the duct. It's important to stretch it out. It's a convenient product to install but it does require some skill to get it right.

I really dislike going into drawers and such to find remotes or whatever.  I have run into a couple of surprises!

Flex ducts are not understood it seems, or they don't care that they don't blow air!

Also good to point out that if the home was built in the 70's or 80's, it may have a type of duct that deteriorates it the heat of the attic.  This can lead to substantial energy loss and condensation problems.  If the outside of the duct is grey, it may be one of the problem ducts.

Robert, Good to note. I don't see the grey duct very much but will be looking, thanks.

Kinked flexible ducts are a major problem. It's just like your garden hose, if its kinked it doesn't flow. Here is a product that shapes flex ducts into 90-degree elbows to eliminate kinks. www.flexright.net
