Recent Rains Offer Spectacular Hiking In Marin

They say that every cloud has a silver lining.  The silver lining to the rain clouds that have been hovering over Marin County lately just might be the spectacular hiking opportunities they bring. Hiking in Marin is always awesome; now, with runoff from all the recent rain we’ve had, cascades of waterfalls will be added to the usual beautiful scenery and open vistas that lure hundreds to Marin’s trail system.  Many of our towns have hiking trails literally right out their back door.  Some favorite waterfalls that are easily accessible include Cascade Falls near Fairfax, Dawn Falls in Larkspur, and Alamere Falls in the Point Reyes region.

You don’t need to visit “official” falls, however, to enjoy the beauty created by the rivulets of cascading water.  Mt Tamalpais offers some especially intriguing opportunities.  Find a trail that follows a contour line (vs. a steep trail that heads straight up) and you are bound to find runoff creating rills and rivulets, as well as cascading water and seasonal falls.

Before you hike after heavy rains it would be smart to check with the ranger’s station to be sure no trails are damaged/closed.  Be sure to wear proper clothing and footwear, carry water, and always let someone know where you are going.  For directions to some of Marin’s better known spots, check out this website Marin Waterfalls.  Happy hiking!

Renee-

It sounds spectacular. I'd love to see some pictures!

Some of my favorite hiking spots are still closed from October's fires. :-(
