Cold Weather Reminders for Everyone
We are all experiencing severe cold weather across the nation so here are a few reminders so everyone stays safe and healthy. Be Safe!
Outside:
-
Avoid overexertion, such as shoveling heavy snow, pushing a car, or walking in deep snow. Sweating could lead to chill and hypothermia. Cold weather also puts extra strain on the heart, so the elderly and those with heart conditions should be especially cautious when out in the cold.
-
Walk carefully on snowy, icy sidewalks.
-
Wear loose lightweight warm clothing in layers with a waterproof outer layer. Wear a hat, scarf and mittens.
-
Keep your clothes dry. Change wet clothing and socks. Keep the top of your head covered with a warm hat as you lose body heat here.
- Do not drive in bad weather conditions if you are exhausted.
- Turn on GPS signal in your cell phone- good tracking device is you are lost
Home:
- Battery-powered flashlight
- (NOAA) weather radio and portable radio
- Extra food- canned, dry food, nuts/ power bars.
- Can opener
- Bottled water- at least 3 gallons per person
- Make sure each member of the household has a warm coat, gloves, hat and water-resistant boots.
- Extra blankets and Clean Sleeping Bags.
- Have extra dietary foods and medicine for infants, elderly or disabled.
- Be aware of potential fire and carbon monoxide hazards if you plan to use an emergency heating source such as a fireplace, wood stove or space heater.
- If the power goes out, try to use battery operated lighting. If you use candles, be very careful of fire dangers.
- Turn off TV's and Computers if a storm is coming due to power failures.
- Do not bring in and light any barbecues in the house! This will kill you!
Pets:
- Keep extra food/medicine on hand for your pets.
- Bring your pets inside during the cold weather.
- Don’t forget a warm sweater/coat for your pet.
- If you walk your dog in the snow, get boots for the dog.
- If you go outside with your pet, shorten the walk due to wind chill/frostbite.
- Keep your pets well nourished with food and water.
Vehicle:
- Your car should always be equipped with emergency supplies. Keep the following items stored in a portable container:
- A small battery powered radio (AM is sufficient) and extra batteries
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Green Neon light Sticks- Cyalume (the ones you break to use)
- Cellular phone and charger
- Cell Phone External Battery (backup minutes)
- Windshield scraper
- Jumper cables
- Fire extinguisher
- Maps (if your car won’t start, your navigation won’t work)
- Shovel
- Blanket and extra clothes
- Flares
- Bottled water and nonperishable, high energy foods (granola bars, canned nuts, raisins, hard candy, trail mix, peanut butter and crackers)
-
First aid kit
-
Tire repair kit and pump
-
Tow chain or rope
-
Chains for Tires if you live in an area where they are required in snow.
*Three last Safety tips by Kristin Hamilton:
-
If you know of an elderly or sick friend who lives alone, go by and check on them and perhaps keep them with you during bad storms. Be sure to get extra clothes and medicines.
- We are all experiencing harsh weather and storms so expect the worst and be prepared. You may lose power for 1-2 days so be able to hold up in your home comfortably.
- Keep your ‘gas tank’ full. Stop and buy gas on the way home so if you do have to evacuate you are not on empty.
