Not My Best Day

By
Real Estate Agent with Realty One Group RB14038403

Last Saturday was not my best day. As a Realtor®, I try to be as focused as I can. As a human being, …it doesn’t always work out that way. Here’s an example of failed multi-tasking on my part:

This past Saturday morning, I was busy preparing paperwork, comps, etc. to bring along to a showing for a new client. I was about to walk out the door when my cell phone rang. It was an agent from Florida who has her license in referral with a local EXIT Realty office there. She has parents who live in Indiana who need to sell their house, cannot get a loan modification, and due to various other reasons must attempt to short sell the house. Being the agent she is, she wanted to try to refer her parents to another EXIT Realty agent.

Realizing that I didn’t have a pen, I went back to my office and sat down as this agent gave me details of her parents’ needs. It turned out that her parents live in Connersville, which is about an hour-and-a-half drive from Brownsburg. There are no other EXIT offices closer to Connersville. I thanked her for contacting me with the opportunity to help, but the distance plus my general unfamiliarity of the Connersville area caused me to recommend that I try to find another agent closer to her parents, regardless of the real estate company that agent works for.

I told her I’d call around and find someone more local who is experienced with listing short sales, and I would get back with her the next day. She asked if I had her number, and I asked if the number she called from is good, since it was captured on the cell phone. She said, “Yes,” and I told her I’d get to work on it that afternoon.

Geek Squad

There were just a couple of problems with that. 1) My phone had broken a few days before and I was using a loaner from Best Buy. Best Buy had called and let me know that my phone was ready to be picked up. After showing the property to my client, I retrieved my phone, turning in the loaner with the phone number she called from on it. 2) She never gave me her last name or the name of the EXIT office in Florida she was in referral with –and I never asked. There was no way to get back in touch with her, leaving me hoping she will call back and fearing what she’ll say (for not hearing from me) when she does. She hasn’t yet. Not my best day. As real estate agents, we all have days like that. But on the bright side, my youngest daughter finally got her own bedroom furniture suite. Her look brightened my weekend. I can carry on.

Well Mike, it can happen to all of us.  Your story does ring a bell.  I have actually asked if the number they are calling from is the one that came up on my phone, only to find out there was no call back number, I had answered a call that said no caller ID.

Mike,

How many Exit offices are there in Florida? If you have her first name, you can narrow it down to a few choices, then call the offices and see if any of the last names ring a bell. If you gave me the first name of the agent I bet I can find her for you! :)

FYI - There is a www.Exitrealty.com  site where you can search agents by name, first or last. I think you can find her in about 1/2 hour if you call all the ones which match the first name.

Barbara,

There are over 60 offices in Florida. Unfotrunately, in order to search for an agent on the company site, you must have at least a last name. Searching for "Mary" in Florida doesn't work. Plus, I don't think inactive agents with their licenses in referral are listed.

Mike,

You are correct, inactive would be difficult. It was fun to try! I have found a needle in a haystack before when I worked in Los Angeles, my childhood hometown.

Here's hoping that your next call is a cash buyer looking for a very large home with a view, and marble floors!

One more thing I forgot to ask - did you go back to the Best Buy counter to see if they can find the loaner phone?

I did not, might be something to try. And oh, to have those all-cash buyers...

....That cash buyer will likely be at the counter in a crisp pinstriped suit trying to rent out the loaner phone you need to get your lost phone number from....bring a stack of business cards and wear your real estate name tag when you go phone hunting!

PS - Your blog was the best I have read all day long, don't usually get to chat with another agent on the other side of the country at length every day. I toggled this conversation between contracts and setting up a showing appointment for a client who called me out of the blue from at least a year ago. I have enjoyed the experience of this human communication (Thanks Active Rain!) and wish you all the best from my desk in Newport, Oregon!
