The No Trespassing Sign at the Incline - A thing of the past

No Trespassing Sign Manitou Springs Incline I would venture to guess that the No Tresspassing sign on the Incline, located in Manitou Springs, Colorado, was that most photographed sign in the Colorado Springs for years.  It was probably the most ignored sign also.

The Incline is .9 mile long stretch of an old cog railway that goes up the side of Mount Manitou.   The trail is   very steep and the terrain is so rough in a couple of places that you almost have to bear crawl to make it up those parts.

Hiking or running up the Incline is a workout that challenges even Olympic athletes.  and military members.  It is also very humbling because inevitably their will be some 60 or 70 year old guy that passes you up as if he was just taking a stroll in the park.

Until today everyone that was going up  the Incline was trespassing.

There was so much red tape involved to legalize the Incline even President Obama had to get involved and sign a bill that authorized it's opening. Part of the Incline was on National Forest Service Property.  For more information about the struggle to legalize the Incline, see the Gazette's article, "One Step Closer on Incline."

This morning, Feb 1, 2013,  Colorado Springs city councilman Scott Hente celebrated the legalization of the Incline by smashing a bottle of apple cider against the No Trespassing sign.

I'd like to say thank you to the everyone that has worked so hard for years to make the Incline a legal place to hike.  Your hard work paid off today.

If you decide to do the Incline, just remember that when the going gets tough and you want to quit.....just take one step at a time.

The Incline at Manitou Springs Colorado

Sometimes things like this become a huge focus of attention. It is sad that it is so difficult to give everyone what they want. Glad that it is finally open for public enjoyment (although it seems like it has been used for years anyways)!

A bottle of apple cider, ha ha. Christening ships gets champagne, the Incline Apple Juice. Well all I can say, I have known about this PROHIBITION for years and it is about TIME. Very glad to hear for all the hikers in the area Sondra. Job well done. Historic moment captured on video. Takes a long time to cut through red tape doesn't it?

About 20 years ago we visited Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. Since the path to the top was wide and smooth we figured it was no problem..... Wrong.... We must have stopped 5 or 6 times on the way up to catch our breath. It would be interesting to do that again. I wouldn't even attempt the one at Incline.

Sondra - this sounds like my kinda hike! I think "No Tresspassing signs" only add to the alure of breaking the rule. I know what you mean about being on a really steep, difficult hike and witnessing a couple in their 70's pass you by. That happens all the time when we hike in Sedona on some of the steepest trails (4000 vertical feet) up to six miles and it is humbling to say the least!

I wish I had known about this hike when I was in Manitou last fall. Maybe we'll go back this year, and I'll attempt the hike.
