A not so funny thing happened on my way to my companies lead generation system a few weeks back,I found a lead that was actually a referral and for whatever the reason I missed it. At first I thought about just letting it go and chalking it up as a lost opportunity. I would eventually call the referral source and apologize for the mishap and insure them that is was a software glitch and it would never happen again. I also thought about calling the lead but was too embarrassed to do so. I talked my way out of following up and gave myself several reasons why I shouldn’t.
I then remembered Buffini and Company’s Joe Niego sharing the story of him diving into a trashcan to retrieve the “dead wood” leads that one of his colleagues had just disposed of. That trashcan resulted in a sale and a purchase and many referrals years later.
I threw on my big boy pants and made the call that was oh so overdue. I explained to the gentleman on the other side of the line about what had happened and apologized for not calling sooner. He apologized as well and said that he had already spoken to a Realtor but if anything would change he would call me. The old don’t call me, I’ll call you line. Who could blame him, I didn’t follow up in a timely manner which must of left a bad taste in his mouth? Heck I might not hire me if I were in his shoes.
About a week and a half later my courage paid off, my phone rang and it was the referral calling me back. His girlfriend suggested he get a second opinion, and gave me a second chance. I didn’t take that chance for granted and gave it my all and my courage paid off. I’m listing his home this evening. Thank you Joe Niego for the story, it’s a good life.
