Getting Healthy in the Rain

Getting healthy in the rain is a contest among 320,000+ "friends, acquaintances, strangers and competitors".  A challenge issued by Dr. Stacey-Ann Baugh to all Activerain members to set a "health related goal" and blog about it over the next two months.

OK, I am in!

Her statement in the contest challenge:

Set a health related goal - This doesn't have to be weight loss related.  it could be to exercise more, get more regular sleep, lower your blood pressure, stop smoking, cut back on your drinking, whatever you think you need to change.

resonated with me as to a degree I need to change something about myself in each of the categories she mentions!

I need to lose weight, at least a little.  As I type this, I weigh in at 222 lbsReally not that bad since I am 6'5" tall, but my mid section tells me that I need to reduce it's girth by a few inches.  My father used to kid that he wore 34" waist pants, but since 36" waists felt so good he would buy 38".  When I joined the Army back in....well.....40 years ago this coming October, I remember my first Military ID Card said 6'0" and 200# even.  (So I grew a little later in life.)  I'll be happy to get comfortably back into a 34" waist pants, whatever the weight result.

Exercise more, a no-brainer if the above commitment is to happen.  I/we, my better half and I, have a treadmill, stationary bicycle, various weights and a few other items that at this point I ignore.  We also live at the back of a secluded neighborhood that gives me many miles of flat, low traveled, paved roads to walk and eventually jog.

Get regular sleep.  While I do sleep regular hours, between 7-8 hours a night, it has not been "good" sleep.  According to my "better half I have sleep apnea - loud, deep snoring, and I wake up irregularlyI've already taken steps to cure this by seeing a specialist and now I sleep with a CPAP, a type of ventilation (breathing) therapy which has changed my sleeping patterns and I do feel better in the mornings which should help with my overall goal.

My blood pressure, in spite of my other bad habits is within the guidelines for my age and weight so I can only improve this as I accomplish my other goals.

Smoking is a problem, even though I am a closet smoker.  I don't smoke in my house, in my car or around certain friends who also do not smoke.  Many of my co-workers do not know I smoke at all.  In 1985 I quit after having smoked for about 12 years in high school and for about 12 years after.  Then In 1992 I was involved in two major vehicle accidents in two days, neither of which was I the driver nor at fault in any way(walking away from both with no injuries), but after the second someone was smoking near the scene, I bummed a cigarette and 20 more years of smoking commenced.  Smoking will end later this month on February 25th, my birthday.

Drinking isn't really a problem, but I could cut back one or two a week as I don't really need the alcohol or the sugar (calories).

So that's it, the real goal is to comfortably fit into 34" waist pants.  If I accomplish this goal, my overall health and physique will have improved dramatically and so should other areas of my life allowing me to focus better on my long term personal and business goals!

And, I have an "friend, acquaintance, stranger and competitor", Dr. Stacey-Ann Baugh, Realtor-Psychologist to thank!

I hope she doesn't send me a bill!

Steven, it sounds like you just need to fine tune things a bit. Awesome goal to stop smoking, and on your birthday-how cool is that?

Oh man Steven I do hope you quit in 20 days.  Smoking is terrible and this August will be my 4th year without them. I miss 'em sometimes but not the smell, wrinkles, hole in my wallet or yellow teeth...and that's just on the outside!  We're here for you, I know you can do this buddy!!

Awesome goals! Good luck quiting smoking, I know that'll be difficult but the rewards will be worth it! I'm personally on a slow carb diet and would be happy to forward you some literature on it if you're ever interested.
