 Get Healthy in the Rain!!

This is such a timely item for me and it seems like a lot of us here in the Rain. I have been feeling poorly, run down, yet at the same time I do not sleep well. This has all been playing on my mind. I went over to my oldest son Jacob’s home and had a discussion with him about three weeks ago. It went something like…

I don’t feel good anymore; everything hurts. I do not have the energy I used too. I am afraid if I do not make a change in my life I am heading for a heart attack or stroke or diabetes. So just in case – I want to tell you I love you.

You see the last few years I have gained weight consistently. It used to be I could eat anything I wanted and say skip dinner and I would be down two pounds by morning…. Well needless to say that’s not working anymore and I have to finally come to the realization I have to put more thought into what I eat, when I eat and how much I eat.

My son Jake is very much in shape. He works out almost every day, goes to the gym, eats right; has like 11% body fat… he is an athlete. As we talked about what I should be doing, it was decided he would be my coach. Someone I had to answer to sort of speak. (Believe you me; my poor son has his hands full.) Then again, I think he’ll be okay, since he is really a coach – in real life. See Jake has this uncanny ability to be able to hit this small white ball into a hole really far away and he teaches lots and lots of people. They of course pay him for this. I feel pretty lucky that I can have him as my coach for free!!

In order to Get Health Here in the Rain my goal is by May 24th  2013 that I lose 25 pounds. Since I started I have lost about 6 pounds. That came off pretty easily and now I am in a holding pattern. So I have to start exercising more. I don’t like the gyms and its winter here, 16 degree and snow. I am going to have to be creative to keep me interested…. Any ideas?  Also I need to make sure I am setting time aside to exercise.  Thanks for all your support and help.

Kimberly,

Good luck!  You can do it as you have goals and a plan.  Six pounds is huge start and I look forward to hearing about the finish line.

Thanks Tamara, I appreciate it.  For me it's hard to stick to the plan.  I sometimes think I can do it all and I just run out of time.

Thanks Dr. Stacey-Ann,  I believe it's important that someone holds you accountable, just like coaching in real estate.

Hi Kimberly,

What a sobering conversation you had with your son. I am glad he offered to be your coach. Now for some ideas:

Have you heard of "plank a day"? You get onto your elbows and toes and hold the position for as long as you can. It helps to strengthen your body, especially your core muscles. Do this once a day and try to increase the time. It helps to focus on your breathing.

A yoga CD or two to do at home is a great way to exercise.

Best wishes on working toward your goal.

JoAnn thanks for the words of incouragement!  I never heard of "plank a day" I will have to google that.  Do you do yoga?

Thanks and good luck to you too Ridhi.  Get yourself a coach!!  If you know you have to answer to someone you tend to try harder because you know they are going to hold you accountable if you don't.

That's great Alexandra, it always nice to have someone you can workout with and lean on when you have to.

Lots of people seem to be purchasing the nutri-bullet. I have a juicer, but sometimes I do not use it because it takes a long time to clean up. I did by the Nutri-bullet, but am still getting used to it. I have had good results with juicing, but that lifestyle is not for everyone.

Melissa, I have been making progress.  I have to find time to exercise more.  I have been hearing others here that have been juicing.  Medically I do not think juicing would be something I could do.

Haha - Roy, I like your saying.  It really is a good thing to have someone you know personally in your corner if you can!

Dear Kimberly Thurm - Perhaps it has something to do with the food in Naperville and/or Illinois and has nothing to do with how you eat. Only kidding, of course, because I'm from IL and when my spouse was alive he worked at HP in Naperville.

The first part of your blog post sounds exactly what happened to me! I could eat anything I wanted, any time day or night, skip a meal and I'd lose weight too. Or is this just a bad joke on women? Well, I realize your post was written in 2013. How are you doing now? I hope things have improved. I'm still in the same boat.
