The Basics: Easy Tips to Stage Your Posts

When you first join Active Rain, it can be overwhelming when getting started – we’ve all been there and if you follow these easy detailed steps, your posts will look great and be more effective  guaranteed!

Keep in mind we are visual creatures and your posts must look enticing or you’ve lost some readers already. The following steps are simple ways to “stage” your posts and make them more effective and visually appealing.

1. Keep your post text between 200-500 words – face it, people don’t have a lot of time or long attention spans – make it short, sweet and get to the point. Any post that starts with, “I was born...” – forget it, you’ve already lost your audience.

2. Repeat your title at the top of your post to get more exposure from Google.

3. Separate your paragraphs with white space – all text and no spaces makes for a very boring post.  Keep paragraphs to about 5 lines.

4. Before you add photos, save your post to draft. (Don’t trust the automatic save – it doesn’t always work and you could lose your post.)

5. Add 1-4 photos......for the child in all of us. We love pictures! Click on the photo icon (the tree)  and download your picture. Next to “General” (the box you are in), you’ll see the word “Appearance”. Click on it - this is where you add space and/or a border around your photo so the text isn’t smashed up against your picture. You’ll see the words: Vertical, Horizontal and Border – I use 8,8 and 5, but try it out for yourself and see what works for you.

6. Once you have added your photo, click on it and move it to where you want by clicking on the left, right or middle margin icon - now your photo is within your text right were you want it.

7. Add links to your web page by hiding them under a photo for more Google juice and SEO (Search Engine Optimization). To do this highlight your photo, click the chain link icon and add you website URL or any link you want. You can also repeat your post title by filling in the “Title” box. This is much better than actually repeating it throughout your post. Your post title should make up 2-4% of your word count.

8. Add links to each of your website’s pagesdon’t repeat a link – Google doesn’t register more than one, so use this to your advantage and link all your website pages to your post.

9. Highlight links, key words and relevant information so Google views it as important.Be aware that only “Public” posts can be reblogged.

10. Make sure your title is keyword rich. For example: instead of “Home Staging Tips”, write “Home Staging Tips from a Morris County Stager, North Jersey” – be geographically and topic specific.

11. Use the spell check, correct any typos and post to "draft" one last time to look it over and check your links. I have gotten many emails on more than one occasion telling my my links were not working.

12. Lastly, make sure you post to 5 relevant groups
(My Groups) and do not forget to take your post out of draft and post to "Public" or "Members Only. Again, do not forget that only "Public" posts can be reblogged!

I have incorporated each one of these steps in this post!

That’s all for today or I’ll break my rule of writing a post over 500 words – the kiss of death – lol.
