Staging Your Home in a Northern Virginia Winter

Winter is a fact of life here in Northern Virginia, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make your home welcoming and attractive to buyers during these colder months. Here are some ideas to help your home stand out from the snowy crowd.

The most important thing to do is also the simplest – clear a path. If ice and snow have accumulated on your sidewalk, walkway, or driveway, shovel it off and keep them clear while your home is on the market. Don’t forget about patios and decks, too. Keeping these outdoor spaces clear will help prospective buyers imagine the setting in other seasons, and will also give a sense of their size.

Now that it’s clear of snow, make your deck or patio an extension of your home. Set up a seating area and uncover the grill so that it looks ready for a weekend cookout. Consider investing in some all-weather patio furniture and accessories that will welcome buyers into the warmer weather that’s just around the corner. If you have a hot tub, clear the cover of snow, and make it look ready for a steamy soak.

Winter light works perfectly with seasonal sparkle. Turn empty planters or an unused birdbath into a winter display with red berries, evergreens, and sparkly bits such as glitter-coated twigs or a gazing ball. These inexpensive items are all readily available at craft stores and will let buyers know that your home is attractive in any season.

Shorter daylight hours mean that it’s more likely that buyers will see your home after dark. Use lighting to highlight your home’s advantages. Install the highest wattage bulbs allowed in your outside fixtures, and make sure they’re cleaned regularly. Clear flood spotlights will also help show your home’s architectural features. When buyers are viewing your home after dark, turn on all of your interior and exterior lights to welcome them home.

Now is an excellent time to put your home on the market. The inventory of homes for sale is falling, prices are rising, and mortgage interest rates remain low. Here at the Sullivan Group, we’re ready to help you make the most of the season.
