I am very proud to be a Carmel, Indiana REALTOR & I would love to tell you what I think makes Carmel, Indiana the Best Place to Live.
Carmel, Indiana is located just North of Indianapolis, the 12th largest city in the United States. Carmel is the beneficiary of forward thinking city planners who have rejuvenated the downtown area as an Arts & Design District. Art Galleries, home décor & The Indiana Design Center are cornerstones of the district. I love the public art throughout the district, from abstract to very realistic statues of people doing ordinary things: like teach your child to ride a bike! The Indiana Design Center is 82,000 SF of fabric, draperies, lighting, furnishings & ideas with a multitude of designers.
In the midst of the recession, Carmel kept building and opened a state of the art music & theatre venue, called The Palladium, it has been the subject of many national articles and rave reviews. I saw Martina McBride there last year and the acoustics were wonderful, as was Martina! The green space in The Palladium complex is used in the summer months for the Carmel Farmer’s Market. We often bike to it, there is fresh produce, as well as Bar-B-Q, smoothies, usually live music…it is a great way to spend a morning.
CityCenter, a multi-use project is next door to The Palladium, featuring condos, apartments, retail & restaurants plus plenty of parking, it is a ever-expanding source of entertainment options.
The Monon Trail, a greenway that is wonderful for walking, biking, rollerblading etc. goes right through Main Street and proceeds South all the way to the southernmost area of Indianapolis. Sitting at Detour, Bazbeaux’s or Bub’s after a ride & people watching is one of the favorite pastimes of locals! Detour was also the host for the Reggie Wayne radio show during the Indianapolis Colts season, lot’s of fun to be there and participate in the show!
Throughout the warmer months Main Street hosts a number of festivals & free concerts & a 2nd Saturday of each month art walk goes on year round. Main street is home to a number of great shops, cafes and restaurants. One of the things I like best about Carmel’s Main street however, is that theCarmel Public Library and the Carmel HS are located on Main as well When school lets out you see a flood of young people going into the library and getting a coffee drink or snack before starting to study or walking down the street to Tea Buds or the Monon Trail. When I grew up, my school was in the middle of the countryside, nothing around but farms and nothing to do but go home. Carmel teens can be a part of the community with contact with adults & business owners as well as each other. I’ve been very impressed with the young people I’ve seen around and the ones I’ve met, well behaved and friendly.
I guess their behavior is no surprised when you consider the reputation of Carmel Schools, both for academics and sports as well as the level of parental involvement in Carmel.
Soccer, football, basketball, dance, cheerleading, gymnastics, theater arts, art & music..all this and more have numerous clubs, studios etc. in the area for parents and children to participate with.
One of the more unique community assets Carmel has is The Monon Center, which features indoor and outdoor pools, plus water features like a “lazy river”, giant slides, surf wave pool, diving & small children’s pool. The Monon center also has a work-out facility, skate park, meeting rooms, lot’s of classes for all groups & the outdoor nature areas, with trails for walking & biking. We have taken advantage of new trails they opened this past year to the east of the Center, we love to take our dog , Mac over there for walks!
Do you like to shop? In addition to wonderful locally owned shops, Carmel also has Clay Terrace, where you will find many of the major names in retail: Black & White, Chico’s, American Eagle, Ann Taylor, Clarks, Charming Charlie’s, Dicks, & DSW to name just a few.
Whole Foods is also located at Clay Terrace, Fresh Market is just down the road as is Kroger, Marsh, & O’Malia’s for plenty of grocery choice.
What else does Carmel offer? Low crime rates, great neighborhoods, & professional Police & Fire Departments. Carmel is easy to navigate too, at least it is once you master the etiquette of the roundabout. Carmel has more roundabouts than any other city in the country. Why? Roundabouts make traffic flow smoother with less delays (meaning less fuel burned at a stop sign), & they are safer. There are fewer accidents and the ones that do occur are less serious than traditional roadways.
